Given the release time, I think the Laserdisc Wikipedia entry has the solution:

As Pioneer introduced digital audio to LaserDisc in 1985, it further refined the CAA format. CAA55 was introduced in 1985 with a total playback capacity per side of 55 minutes 5 seconds, reducing the video capacity to resolve bandwidth issues with the inclusion of digital audio.

At 114min. run-time, with extra logos and smart side-breaks, I think it couldn't fit on a single disc at that time.

Goonies, The (1985) [11474 LV] had Analog audio only.
Goonies, The (1985) [10JL-11474] added Digital Audio.

Goonies, The (1985) [10JL-11474]

Very odd, I didn't think this would have fallen into that situation.

I was looking at my discs and any of the older ones that are longer in length and single discs are from 1987.

If that’s the case why all the later digital releases including the last widescreen us one aren’t 2 discs?

Keep reading Wikipedia:

By 1987, Pioneer had overcome the technical challenges and was able to once again encode in CAA60, allowing a total of 60 minutes 5 seconds.

Yes Julien but from what I read I assumed that they didn’t released digital audio discs till 87 because of this issue.searching on lddb chronologically there are very few digital discs from 85-86-87 era

That's also how I finally understood why some early 90's LDs were Analog audio when Digital Audio was available for years.

Ex: Whitesnake: Live! (1983) [TOLW-3061]

55 minutes.

Either they didn't want to make a new master and used the 80's initial release one.
Or the original sound master was analog only.
Or adding the digital audio tracks might have pushed the LD over 2 sides for a few minutes. Didn't make sense.

Other similar release:

Howard Jones: Like to Get to Know You Well (1983) [35P6-9012] (58min.)

Yeah, I guess it would have been hard to argue for a new 10 min side just for digital audio back when the vast majority of people barely knew it existed.

I found this thread interesting.

As Julien mentions above, it was the additional of Digital Sound that pushed Goonies to 3 sides. It was true that Digital Sound could only be encoded as CAA55. Japan opted for adding a disc, where US dropped Digital Sound. This was the same for the original edition of "Back to the Future" as well.

Indeed!

Initial 1986 Japanese release 3 sides with Digital Audio: Back to the Future (1985) [SF098-1168]
Initial 1986 USA release 2 sides with Analog-CX only: Back to the Future (1985) [40196]
Japan 1989 re-release on 2 sides: Back to the Future (1985) [SF047-1586]
