First up, a documentary I've seen about 6 jillion times already but one more time can't hurt! The superb When We Were Kings.

If you've never seen it, watch it.

Added to my wishlist. I've been on a big documentary/educational kick lately. Just watched Smithsonian: Gems & Minerals (1989) [LVD9005] which seems excessively dull when looking at the title and cover, but it was pretty good.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's really rather good.

It's a mix of footage filmed before, during and after the 1974 Rumble In The Jungle between Ali and Foreman. This is interspersed with 'talking heads' footage from people who were there at the time, either as part of the entourage, reporters, entertainers or just casual observers.

It's more than just a documentary about a very famous boxing match though.

Just had an absolutely colossal blast from the past.

I watched two animated Don Martin cartoons. Apparently these are so obscure that IMDB doesn't even have them and Martin's own wikipedia page makes only a passing mention of their existence, with no references. And yet, despite not having seen these for nearly 30 years, I still expected the closing credits of the other one to be cut short by Duck Tales because of the tape they were on once upon a time.

That sounds familiar. Are they very short?

Yeah, they're only about five minutes long.

Coincidentally, I watched them on youtube, ripped from VHS, taped off the air which I have very little doubt was recorded from the same broadcast as the ones I used to have as they maintained the German audio and Finnish subtitles.

Perhaps the info below may help with the Don Martin cartoons....

Don Martin, Animated
By Sean Kleefeld | Thursday, November 05, 2020

In 1986, Gerhard Hahn's Deutsche Zeichentrick Erste Produktions GmbH & Co. KG. produced an animated feature called Don Martin Does It Again. It was based off many of Martin's old comic strips and, from what I've seen, are pretty faithful executions of same. Sounds like a brilliant idea! Somehow, though, the pacing and onomatopoeia make the originals funnier to me.

Norma Martin, Don's widow, described it as "a half hour version of one of Don's long stories that can be found in his wholly owned pocketbooks." She added, "Don worked on this project extensively and the film won an award—there were problems of the usual kind between the parties. It was shown on TV in Europe—but never released in the US."

And speaking of Norma, I missed earlier this year (because of the pandemic) that she had set up a GoFundMe to try to keep MAD and DC Comics "from stealing his name, trademark and work." She highlights: "If AT&T [who owns MAD and DC] wins the case I have been fighting all other creative people can just as easily lose control over their names and work too. My opponents have been using Don's name on books and magazines all over the world as if it is their property. They have been putting his name on work he did not create. That is what I am fighting."

I expect the pandemic has really thrown an additional wrench into the works for her. She launched the campaign just as news of COVID's spread began taking over every headline. If you have the means, I'm sure she would appreciate any assistance you can throw her way.

There are a few Don Martin shorts, most less than a minute in length, including the VH1 promo on You-Tube though the quality is pretty poor on a couple.

Cheers  .

That would explain the abscence of an english language version - or an official release of any kind at all.

The fact that the cartoons have German dialogue but all the on-screen text is in English would indicate they intended for them to be released internationally but that didn't pan out.

I did notice that despite the art style is very clearly Don Martin's, the actual animation reminded me of the 1980s Asterix films and, looking at the credits on IMDB, many of the people involved did indeed work on those as well.

Just watched a few days ago Wolfen on DVD, what a really bad film, hadn't seen it in years and found the DVD for a buck at the thrift store.

Anyway lots of similarities to Predator, the night vision stuff from the angle of the wolf or predator, also some of the music was very close, I didn't
look it up but I'm sure the same person did the music.

Non other than the late great James Horner credited with the Wolfen movie score; infact one of his first, Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future etc.) takes the credits for Predator apparently.

Watched another film from the Universal Classic Monsters Blu Ray box set. This time it's film number 7, the Phantom of The Opera!

Boy oh boy this film is a turd.

I was looking forward to a few frights. Instead the only horror in this film is the mediocre acting and the relentless opera singing. Don't get me wrong, a bit of opera is great (Final Fantasy VI, the Beethoven opera I watched late last year starring Lise Davidsen and so on).

This film is absolute bum grapes and should never have been included in the Universal box set. For starters, the mask they give yer man to wear looks like a cut out from a paper plate someone used at a picnic. The phantom looks about as terrifying as W G Grace.

7 down, 1 to go!

My Universal monsters DVD set has thirty one (31) movies in it. The Blu-ray only has eight? That’s some crap right there...

In the 31 movie box the variation in style and quality and budget and talent is extremely up and down over the years.

Creature From The Black Lagoon is next. There is also a 3D version included in the box, as well as the Spanish version of Dracula. So I guess I need to watch both of those too to complete the box!

There's apparently another blu-ray box that also has thirty something movies in it.

Unfortunately only the 8 movie one got an international release :x

Last night I finished watching the Jackie Chan Crime Story.
OK film, wonder if it wasn't jackie would it even be around???
Seemed so tossed together that I couldn't really figure out what was going on until the halfway point.
Must for the Jackie diehard fan.

Must for the Jackie diehard fan.

Kind of reminds me of that one criticism of Raw Deal which I think is pretty accurate; that it's basically just a Charles Bronson vehicle retooled into a Schwarzenegger one.

Hulu kept tempting me to come back with another free month, so I took that and started watching Futurama. I finally got all the way through the series as of two days ago.

Then, the same night, I watched the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. It was okay. Jim Carrey played a great Dr. Robotnik. Definitely glad the studio went back and redid Sonic's character model.

I have been watching DVDs lately. I think last time was more than 10 years ago. Man I have been spoiled by Blu-rays and 4K, DVDs look awful. Unfortunately there is a ton of content out there on DVD only.
