Man On Wire? I watched that a good while ago. It's a great docu. How on Earth he had the courage to go through with it I just cannot fathom.

I guess at such a height if he did fall he'd have likely died of shock or something long before reaching the ground? (Said with the greatest of respect considering the WTC connection).

Just finished watching a great LD
Salvador Dali: A Soft Self-Portrait (1971) [ID5337PA]

From the info I can find is that this is on LD only, a must have and not very expensive from the copies I've found.

I’ve been on a Macross thing lately. The original Flashback 2012 LD looks way better on my setup than the Blu-ray version does. I learned recently that the giant city in a ship idea was left over from Ulysses 31. The OG TV show has terrific pacing. The least I ever paid for an individual LD (above “free”) was Macross Dynamite 7 Vol1 at six (6) yen. Macross is still a lot of fun, I don’t know why all the new toys and models have itty bitty tweezer hands. I don’t like it, not at all. It’s conspicuously weird and obvious.

I had actually watched 2012 a few weeks ago, really only the beginning and end are the major parts with the new anime.
But its so amazing and there really isn't even any dialog, its all visual and pure anime gold.

I have not yet made a list of films that I would like to see this weekend. Maybe someone can suggest some good movies? Interested in comedies, dramas, fantasy, moderate action films (that is, not just a fight and a shootout, but to have a reasonable plot).

Watched Crocodile Dundee and White Men Can't Jump this week. Totally forgot Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski got together and eventually married after this film. Not as funny as I remembered it. The "that's not a knife..." scene is still a cinema classic though.

White Men Can't Jump I've seen a couple of times since first renting it on VHS back in 1992. I think it's a great film that still holds up. It's not just about playing basketball and works on many different levels even if underneath it all it is a bit silly. Comfort viewing.

I bought a DVD of Cosmos (OG) from US Amazon. The pictures showed the case being...slightly foreign looking, but it did say NTSC so I ordered it. It arrives and I see that it’s Australian, Region 4...or so it says. It plays perfectly on a US machine so I assume they made it all-region but lied on the box. Weird.

The same thing happened with a Blu-ray of 2001: A Space Odyssey except it was a UK copy. I’m glad the FBI warnings aren’t there but standards have fallen. I don’t like not knowing what I’m buying.

Anyway, Cosmos rules. It’s the Nausicaa of the US. You either saw it as a kid or you turned out like Forper.

I blocked him ages ago and I have no idea what he’s up to other than I think he’s permabanned.

If he has cancer or got in a car wreck or something then I genuinely apologize. If he’s somewhere still wishing for his parents to die so he can spend his inheritance on Neo Geo games (his idea, not mine) then I genuinely don’t apologize. He’s not a nice guy and he’s hell bent to prove it. I’m not going to get in his own way of that’s the life he wants.

If you haven’t seen Cosmos (how can you possibly not know what it is?) that’s sort of a bummer but you’ve seen a great deal of stuff and had your outlook formed by that. I’m pretty sure Forper was raised in a steal box with nothing but high fructose corn syrup and Alien movies to nourish him.

Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. It’s a book, a record, a TV series, and at this point half way to a religion in itself. The word “Cosmos” refers to everything everywhere, not just deep space or whatever, same with the show.

There was a reboot a few years ago, I got bored in half an episode. I haven’t heard anyone mention the reboot since it aired. I don’t think anyone cared.

His Cosmos series is one of my all time favs on LaserDisc.
The Ted Turner interview with Carl at the end of the series is priceless IMO.

Man that guy was gifted with far sighted vision.

That series is what I am going to be "rewatching" over the summer ....

Cheers mates

There are so many “science” shows these days that cover basically the exact same ground but most of them stink. Cosmos has what so many lack; a thesis.

Watched that Pokemon Detective Pikachu 3D film yesterday. Figured I'd go all out and watch it on 3D Blu Ray via the Sony HMZ-T3W. :D

Not really a film I'd go out of my way to watch (I was vetting it to see how age-appropriate it would be for small people and just ended up watching the whole thing). It was surprisingly enjoyable for a subject I knew little about. Sure I was around the first time Pokemon came to market in the 1990's but was never interested. Nothing changed in the years to follow. Yet the film does a good enough job of giving a rough overview of what the Pokemon universe is about without appearing too condescending to both beginners and seasoned fans alike.

It's very formulaic buddy movie stuff with a few moral values about caring and teamwork thrown in, which was nice I suppose. Most of the Pokemon intricacies went over my head, not that I really paid much attention or cared. The payoff at the end is fairly well done, if a bit obvious to an adult, but to a child's mind it would be a good plot climax I think.

The DTS-HD-MA track is really well done. Nice and wide with some great effects panning, particularly towards the end of the film and also during a nightclub scene. I really enjoyed the 3D too. I was expecting it to be full of gimmicks and pop-out due to being geared towards children. Yet the 3D is subtle but adds some fantastic depth in places. I didn't notice much in the way of pop-out, though there is a nice Earthy landscape sequence about halfway through with falling rocks, wind and dirt flying around the screen that looks superb. If it's a post-conversion I think it's really well done.

I don't think the film is really one for younger children to watch, maybe around 8-9+ as some sequences and subject matter I think are better processed by older children. Some sequences could come across as a little too frightening as well. Have a look and judge for yourself I guess.

As far as marketing hype craze-fuelled children's films go, this is one of the better ones I've seen. Reminds me of when the Teenage Mutant Hero (aka Ninja) Turtles film launched in a blaze of hype and marketing and Topps cards with bubblegum way back in 1990. Hmm, I may have to go dig out my old Technotronic soundtrack cassette now...

Just watched Peau d'âne / Donkey Skin last night.

Finally got the projector out and enjoyed this classic film.

Watched Luca earlier today with some small people. It's a pretty short and simple tale (mainly because the credits are 13 minutes long, a new record?). Yet despite the simplicity of the plot and dealing with friendship, inclusion and so on it is a great little film.

Story aside, visually it is absolutely stunning. I watched the 4K HDR version (on an Ambilight display) and it looked gorgeous. The detail and quality of the animation is of such a high standard, I'd go so far as to say it's one of Pixar's best. There's a scene near the end where a cycle race is taking place in the village and it starts to rain. The details are so intricate that you even see the tiny droplets of spray coming from between the cycle tyre and the contact on the cobbled streets. The contrast between the surface and underwater worlds is equally well done too with each world set with distinctive pallets and details but both looking beautiful.

I loved the soundtrack too. There's some really nice old time music used throughout the film and suits the tone perfectly. I would like to get the soundtrack some day for a proper listen!

The main thing though is that the small people enjoyed it (as well as myself!). Definitely give Luca a look, preferably in 4K HDR over on Disney+.
