If you've never seen it, watch it. Added to my wishlist. I've been on a big documentary/educational kick lately. Just watched Smithsonian: Gems & Minerals (1989) [LVD9005] which seems excessively dull when looking at the title and cover, but it was pretty good.

Perhaps the info below may help with the Don Martin cartoons.... Don Martin, Animated By Sean Kleefeld | Thursday, November 05, 2020
In 1986, Gerhard Hahn's Deutsche Zeichentrick Erste Produktions GmbH & Co. KG. produced an animated feature called Don Martin Does It Again. It was based off many of Martin's old comic strips and, from what I've seen, are pretty faithful executions of same. Sounds like a brilliant idea! Somehow, though, the pacing and onomatopoeia make the originals funnier to me.
Norma Martin, Don's widow, described it as "a half hour version of one of Don's long stories that can be found in his wholly owned pocketbooks." She added, "Don worked on this project extensively and the film won an award—there were problems of the usual kind between the parties. It was shown on TV in Europe—but never released in the US."
And speaking of Norma, I missed earlier this year (because of the pandemic) that she had set up a GoFundMe to try to keep MAD and DC Comics "from stealing his name, trademark and work." She highlights: "If AT&T [who owns MAD and DC] wins the case I have been fighting all other creative people can just as easily lose control over their names and work too. My opponents have been using Don's name on books and magazines all over the world as if it is their property. They have been putting his name on work he did not create. That is what I am fighting."
I expect the pandemic has really thrown an additional wrench into the works for her. She launched the campaign just as news of COVID's spread began taking over every headline. If you have the means, I'm sure she would appreciate any assistance you can throw her way. There are a few Don Martin shorts, most less than a minute in length, including the VH1 promo on You-Tube though the quality is pretty poor on a couple. Cheers .

That would explain the abscence of an english language version - or an official release of any kind at all. The fact that the cartoons have German dialogue but all the on-screen text is in English would indicate they intended for them to be released internationally but that didn't pan out. I did notice that despite the art style is very clearly Don Martin's, the actual animation reminded me of the 1980s Asterix films and, looking at the credits on IMDB, many of the people involved did indeed work on those as well.

Anyway lots of similarities to Predator, the night vision stuff from the angle of the wolf or predator, also some of the music was very close, I didn't look it up but I'm sure the same person did the music. Non other than the late great James Horner credited with the Wolfen movie score; infact one of his first, Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future etc.) takes the credits for Predator apparently.

Watched another film from the Universal Classic Monsters Blu Ray box set. This time it's film number 7, the Phantom of The Opera! Boy oh boy this film is a turd. I was looking forward to a few frights. Instead the only horror in this film is the mediocre acting and the relentless opera singing. Don't get me wrong, a bit of opera is great (Final Fantasy VI, the Beethoven opera I watched late last year starring Lise Davidsen and so on). This film is absolute bum grapes and should never have been included in the Universal box set. For starters, the mask they give yer man to wear looks like a cut out from a paper plate someone used at a picnic. The phantom looks about as terrifying as W G Grace. 7 down, 1 to go!

rein-o wrote: Last night I finished watching the Jackie Chan Crime Story. OK film, wonder if it wasn't jackie would it even be around??? Seemed so tossed together that I couldn't really figure out what was going on until the halfway point. Must for the Jackie diehard fan. Kind of reminds me of that one criticism of Raw Deal which I think is pretty accurate; that it's basically just a Charles Bronson vehicle retooled into a Schwarzenegger one.
