I wish he’d do something. It’s been 18 years since his last album of new material IIRC.

Going to watch Top Secret shortly. Did end up going with the DVD as I just don't trust random eBay sellers anymore for LD.

Been watching Babylon 5 which is a really damn good sci-fi show. Better than any Star Trek easily.

Been trying to take a half decent picture of my display with LD playing. I took about 50 shots with all kinds of different settings and most turned out like this or worse:

These were the best I could get, still don't capture what I actually see very well but I think you can see the natural skin tones and detail a little in the below shots:

LD is Honda Minako the Virgin Live

Nope.

I'm guessing you disagree with the 2nd part of the post?

Missed the broadcast this year (surprised that it was even shown on TV again!)

Not the best Peanuts special, but still enjoyable.

Just picked up the newly released Nemesis Bluray yesterday. It comes with 3 versions of the film. The theatrical cut is on Blu-ray and in 1080p. Audio is lpcm 2.0. This disc holds both 1.78:1 version and 2.35:1 version of the theatrical cut. They appear to be different masters. 2.35:1 version is granier and less processed.

The other two cuts are on the provided dvd. They are in 480i. These versions are directors cut and japanese cut. Directors cut is in 1.78:1 and the japanese cut is in 1.33:1 with japanese subs burned in the image. The japanese cut is a big suspect they used the japanese ld as the master :)

Last night I saw the Truman Show for the first time in my life. What can I say: it is perfect. I haven't seen a film in a long time that touched me in this way. There is not a single bad thing I could say about
this film: terrific performances by Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Noah Emmerich was fantastic, so was Truman's wife and Natascha McElhone, it has humour, it is very emotional, it has a great score...
I watched it on Netflix trough my PS4. I was very pleased with the sound quality. I thought the entire film sounded and
looked excellent. I have seen a lot of decent films in the last couple of years but this without a doubt is one of the best films I have seen in the last couple of years. I am sick and tired of pretentious films
such as Interstellar that cost hundreds of millions of dollars. No, the Truman Film is a film with a soul, it makes you think on so many different levels. I especially enjoyed Ed Harris' dialogue towards
the end and I loved the ending. They could have shown how Truman got back together with Sylvia, etc., but that wasn't really necessary. Wow, I am speechless.

Btw, the ratio of the laserdisc 1,66:1 is the original ratio ! Only the original US DVD has this ratio, too.

=> from imdb: Director Peter Weir filmed in the 1.66:1 ratio to make it feel more like a television show.

I loved The Truman Show when it was first shown & revisit it every now & again.

Got to agree, rather special all round.

Cheers

Yes, I just ordered the first US DVD from a seller in Germany for a few €. I prefer watching a film in its original aspect ratio even if there is a Blu Ray and later US editions
that might look better but are cropped to fit modern day TVs. I really hate that. Look what they did to the first seasons of the X Files on Blu Ray. I'd rather watch the laserdisc
edition anytime !

The same goes with artificial audio upmixes. I want to watch a film with the original soundtrack. What's up with the all these fake audio upmixes ? Is it really necessary to
add a Dolby Atmos upmix to a film like Blade Runner ? That's not how this film is supposed to sound. What's wrong with the excellent 5.1 mix from the Blu Ray ?
I'd rather watch an older film with its original mono soundmix ( such as Full Metal Jacket ) than some fake 5.1 upmix with sound effects that sounded completely different when
the film was released.

I agree that The Truman Show is really good. It’s also a really good LD. When I got mine from G&J they gave me a “Save Truman” button left over from the original promo push. I treasure it.

The Truman Show fits my extremely stringent definition of Science Fiction and also managed to be a good movie despite having Jim Carry in it who...is one of many fevered egos in Hollywood I can’t stand anymore. All these things are also true of Eternal Sunhine of the Spotless Mind. It’s great, has Jim Carry in it, and it fits my extremely narrow opinion of what true sci-fi is. If you liked one be sure to see the other.

Last night I listened to the 2017 stereo mix of Stg Pepper which...makes me glad my receiver has a mono button. I’m almost completely new to the Beatles and this was the in-laws way of finally exposing them to me. It was at times hard to concentrate on the record because so many of the sounds are so hard panned left or right. As I understand it this was made to replace the original stereo mix which was quickly thrown together but I don’t know anything about it beyond that. Somebody must hate this mix because I don’t like it and I’ve never even heard this record straight through before.

Jim isn't a bad actor but I get your point. The Truman show is really good, and I haven't seen it in about 10+ years, I should remedy that. As a bonus, the BD appears to be quite cheap.

Yes but it has the wrong aspect ratio !

Only the laserdisc and the first US release have the correct aspect ratio.

If I like a particular film very much I usually try to get several versions of it and buy its soundtrack on vinyl, tape or CD, too.

After getting the US DVD I am sure I will get the US laserdisc, too, as well as the soundtrack. They are all dirt cheap.

I agree, Jim Carrey is not my favourite actor, either, but he was perfect for this film. I would like to see 23, too, one day.
Man on the Moon was excellent, too. He was perfect for this, too. But his other films such as The Mask or Ace Venture are not entertaining at all in my view.

First US BD has the correct aspect radio? Or first DVD? Aspect ratio is very important to me, I won't compromise on it.

First US DVD and US Laserdisc both have the correct aspect ratio.

1.66:1 is the correct ratio? Imdb although not always reliable says 1.85:1.

Author:  rein-o [ 13 Jan 2019, 23:50 ]
Post subject:  Re: What have you been watching?

When you click more info on aspect ration on imdb it says:

Aspect Ratio 1.85 : 1 (theatrical ratio)
1.66 : 1 (intended ratio)

Also under trivia it says:
Director Peter Weir filmed in the 1.66:1 ratio to make it feel more like a television show. Only the original DVD is in this aspect ratio. The theatrical cut was cropped to 1.85:1 and the Blu-ray release to 1.78:1.

But from what I see above the director wanted 1.66, I don't own it and did see it at the theater, so I guess I'll have to pickup a copy of something early at 1.66
