Been picking up some really cheap DVDs to fill in the collection of older films.
W.C. Fields and Laurel & Hardey.
Fun stuff but no LDs, looking for some LDs but always sad when they are triple the price for a common title on DVD and even more
common on Bluray

I enjoy LD too but yeah... SO not worth it in many cases. I just need to find a sucker collector to buy my Meet Joe Black. I'd trade it as well actually.

I haven't spun any LD's in over 5 years. Finally hooked up LD player again, going to get thru some titles now and then, mostly stuff that I'd never buy on DVD/BD.

Watched Jade the other day. I've seen before many years ago. Just a hint of sparkle at one point in movie but didn't last long. Took me awhile to get LD player hooked up right for sound. There were analog tracks, digital and AC3, finally got AC3 hooked up the way it should. Made a big difference. Played this on my projector screen. 125".

If anyone has seen Vampire Hunter D bloodlust, what have you thought about it? I've seen it multiple times and this last viewing I realized it sucks. The first one was a masterpiece and evoked the book really well. But bloodlust for various reasons like voice acting, style and substance and lack of the feel of the books it was based on, seems like it should never had been made.

I'm not a fan. I'd give it like a 6/10 or so. I think I posted about it before on here.

Recently spun my LD copy of "Pass the Ammo," such an odd yet very funny take on corrupt southern evangelists getting hijacked on national TV.

Higher Learning (1994) [73396]

only because of Jennifer.

It was stupid since people seemed to get away with s**t on campus. I mean there is constantly violence but no one seems to be thrown out or anyone seems to care about stopping it. Where are the faculty at this school?? Laurence Fishburn is the only one in the movie and he doesn't do anything but be philosophical. idiots.

I recently rewatched Vampire Hunter D for the first time since probably the mid 90s. It was a great US Blu-ray from somebody.

To be honest I’d never want a sequel. To me the main attraction of the thing is to see the cool stuff and the cool people who made the novels and the illustrations be able to bring that stuff to life with the can-do vibe of 80s otaku. Something made 15 years later with gaijin money, originally recorded in English even, just isn’t the same thing. It’s way way another thing. I could be anything. It could be way way better, it just can’t do the thing an 80s OVA does. It wasn’t made by hand. Whalers on the Moon as far as I’m concerned.

Sentai. I have it as well and agree it is a well done BD.

I agree that a lot of the charm of the original is just the cool factor. As a movie it's not particularly amazing.

Yeah, cool factor totally. People saw a really cool drawing and they wanted that to come to life in a cool way. It’s a pretty garbage OVA on most levels but the music and the design and all that make it memorable. To be honest there are a lot of OVAs like Vampire Hunter D..., most came later and/or are p0rn.

There is no cool factor at all in a sequel that probably cost at least 50 times what the original did and people don’t like it despite the animation being easily 50 times better. That’s worse than Whalers on the Moon. That’s GTO from Two Lane Blacktop uncool.

It’s Halloween time so I’ve gathered together all my s**t for it.

Universal Classic Monsters DVD set. This is thirty (30) movies plus Spanish Dracula. It’s actually a collection of previous collections so House of Frankenstein is on there three times. Last night it was The Invisible Man’s Revenge. This is a really good box set.

The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. I just love this thing. I wish more stuff like it survived.

Many more PG or lighter Halloween stuff to come since it’s not even October yet.

Watched the original Tron on blu-ray the other day. Was surprised by the stereo channels actually seeing some activity. It might not be a great movie, but I freaking love the design aesthetic.

Exactly. Tron is Disney’s Vampire Hunter D. It’s brilliant and crap at once and nobody wanted the debatably superior sequels made way too late.

That would be really hard to reboot successfully and still be recognizable.

how are the LDs of that? Would a Japanese release be better than a US release for the Black Hole? I only have the DVD and Anniversary Edition VHS.

The Black Hole is on BD now but afaik it's missing the intro/music bit. I don't know why. Apparently there's a streamed version that does have the music but just a black screen.

I can't confirm this info myself...yet.

I have not seen one of these Black Hole LDs for years but if memory serves me the LD releases were not good.

Both were fairly early releases (around 1985-ish??) & I think the US release had a few issues & the Japanese release had a very soft image again if my memory serves me, more details are on the title listings.

I have a DVD of the film and it has the intro music.
Wouldn't bother buying this film again as I'm happy enough with the DVD.

I had the LD once, it was blown out and horrible, never had the JP release.

Also I do remember there being a rare version on DVD or some type of misprint or issue when release but I only read that once
a long time ago, even longer than starwars.
