Watched the Magic Kitchen DVD I bought the other day tonight. 16 years since I saw it last. Still a good film. Token Letterboxd thoughts here: The first time I saw Magic Kitchen was in 2004 on an official HK VCD I imported, and still own. It was during a time that I was discovering what Hong Kong and Korea had to offer filmgoers. Magic Kitchen entered my life along with some other greats of the day, many in lovely limited edition DVD presentations. My Sassy Girl, Il Mare, 100 Days With Mr. Arrogant, Natural City and the absolutely magisterial hyperfilm.... ...ing. All were blind buys. All blew my mind, especially ...ing. I'd bought ...ing on Blu Ray recently (limited to 500 copies alas if you are looking to buy it get in quick) and wondered if Magic Kitchen was available on Blu Ray to upgrade my lofi VCD edition. Well, it's long out of print and thus expensive so I managed to find a used DVD instead for sensible money. The DVD is pretty good. You get an anamorphic presentation which is a bit of a shame in my opinion, but you do get a really nice Cantonese DTS audio track as well as a Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The audio is a treat, especially the DTS. The majority of the soundtrack is jazz with a couple of lacklustre romcom ballads sprinkled in. The jazz tracks are filled with great piano and double bass that stretched my humble sound systems legs. As for the film? It was really good to see it again after so many years! It's pretty much as I remember. An amusing romcom set in both Hong Kong and Japan. You get a good pair of leads with a decent, believable chemistry and a decent supporting cast. I felt Andy Lau was perhaps a little bit wasted in this role but still gave it a good go. Perhaps after 16 years the film does lack a little bit of it's sass, but even today it still looks fresh and vibrant, only the technology really dates it a little. Plot wise it is all a bit formulaic, but the film does well to blur the lines a little with the comedic elements as well as some more somber and dramatic key moments that do keep Magic Kitchen afloat throughout rather than just treading water. If you want to kick back and spend 103 minutes with a fun film and a bucket of popcorn washed down with a glass of fresh Hokkaido milk (watch the film to understand) then you could do a lot worse. Don't worry about going for the DVD either, anamorphic presentation aside, it's a good one. I'm off to down a bucket of steamed crabs and a well of Hokkaido milk...

I picked up a DVD of Natural City around 2004-05, it may be a bootleg, its a 2 disc set but has English subs. Fun film, I need to watch that one again. Not too into the romcoms from Asia but may check out some on YT, always willing to see something new and interesting. Just picked up a DVD of 8 Diagram Pole Fighter aka Invincible Pole Fighter, look forward to watching that one next. Right now I'm finishing up the GTO series downstairs and upstairs finished watching Crusher Joe and now started with the OVAs.

Natural City is superb. I don't get the whole Korean Blade Runner tag. It's not that at all. I have the DVD in a limited edition metal slipcase. It looks the bees knees, I don't think even the Blu got that treatment!
I don't really like romcoms or the real saccharine guff. Though Korea and to a lesser extent HK made some really good ones that appeal to a far wider audience than the stereotypical romcom fanatics, or people that like classy stuff like The Piano, The Notebook and Rawhead Rex.
Magic Kitchen is fun though as it tips more to the comedy side with very little in the way of saccharine, pant wetting guff that will leave audiences blubbing uncontrollably.
Korea was on a roll at the turn of the millennium. ...ing and Il Mare are absolute classics. Shame Hollywood went and pissed all over Il Mare's chips with The Lake House. It was a valiant effort I suppose.
There's one I haven't seen yet that is supposed to be amazing called Christmas In August. That's high on my watchlist.
Give Magic Kitchen a go though, it's a great little film. Nothing mindblowing, just good entertainment for an hour and a bit.
Oh and re Natural City being a bootleg, if it's from a reputable dealer you should be okay. There's lots of different versions of Korean and HK stuff for different markets. Many have English subs, albeit poorly translated sometimes. My DVD is 2 disc too with English subtitles.
Places like Yes Asia are where I import my discs from. Used them for almost 20 years now off and on with no problems at all.

rein-o wrote: I think they use the Bladerunner deal to make more sales, that's why I bought it but its really not even near BR just a decent futuristic film with some rip of Matrix too. Precisely this. I caved after putting the idea in my head and watched Christmas In August tonight (it's on Google Play Movies to rent for $1.99 SD $2.99 HD or buy for $6.99). What an absolutely magnificent film. I think the reason it is so good lies in it's simplicity. It's such a pure, simple and beautifully shot film. You kind of think it may give you a little more than it does, but by the end credits it all slots in to place and you realise the film doesn't need anything else. It's superb. Very highly recommended. Definitely buying the Blu at some stage. In fact I'd probably go so far to agree with the critics in that yes, this is probably one of, if not the, best Korean drama ever made. It's that good. Don't watch the trailer if you are curious to watch it. I feel it sells the film completely wrong. Just go in to it 100% blind.

Well this being the witching season or whatever, I've created a completely arbitrary list of horror films to watch in an order determined by the highly scientific method of random chance.
Watched The Shining last night; the European version, since I think I watched the US version the last time. While I do think the Euro version flows a lot better, there are a couple of transitions that seem a bit awkward; namely the part where Hallorann attempts to call the hotel and then the local forest services to get in touch, hardly any time seems to pass at the hotel when it cuts there and back to Hallorann who is already sitting in a plane, almost making it seem like he didn't even bother waiting for the FS to get back on him on his phone call before booking a flight and getting on it.
I still find it funny that one of the scenes cut from the Euro version is a brief scene of Jack asking Ullman why they're closing the hotel during what seems like the ideal ski season, which is something I've seen a lot of people ask too who have only seen the European version of the movie!
I still want to pick up the old JP LD of the movie, even though I already own it on multiple formats, just because it's one of my favourite movies and I really like that old style Warner home video cover template they used. There's one on ebay but I don't want it bad enough to pay $50 for it!

I usually watch one film per day.
Here are a couple of films that I have watched over the past couple of weeks:
- Session 9. Watched this one via Netflix USA last night ( using ExpressVPN, picture quality good most of the times but at times it can get a bit blocky but it is stable ). I loved this film and thought it was very well executed plus I love every film that has John Lucas in it. He was great as was the guy from CSI Miami. If you are looking for a clever horror film, then this is it. I enjoyed this more than all of the recent blockbusters such as Interstellar and other films.
- Dark Skies. Watched this one via Netflix USA. I thought that this one was very good, too, dealing with alien abductions. Of course, I do not believe in such nonsense but it had its very good moments and was an overall captivating experience. Decent performances, not boring one bit, I can recommend this one.
- Rebecca. Made for Netflix movie. I like Arnie Hammer a great deal and I basically like everything that involves the 20s or 30s of the last century and stories about women moving up on the social ladder ( mostly due to marriage with some rich dude ).The costumes were good and so was the story ( it is based on a novel ).
- Valkyrie. Not the first time that I have actually seen this one. The sound effects are absolutely superb. There is a scene at the beginning of the film that explains how the main conspirator ( Stauffenberg ) got his injuries. The sound of the German anti-aircraft gun in the first scene is amazing !!! I am overall very impressed with how this film sounds and looks like. The costumes are fantastic and I love how they portrayed the Wolfs Lair and its different zones and checkpoints. It looked like the real deal. All the subtle details in this film.. It looked extremely authentic. Nonetheless, this film has its weaknesses but overall it is a very enjoyable experience.
- The 36th Chamber of Shaolin via Netflix Germany. Seen this for the first time. Excellent kung fu movie ! The only annoying thing is that it had English audio only and the translation in the English subtitles differed quite a lot at times! I have also seen Return of the 36 chambers and Disciples of the 36th chambers. They are not remotely as good as the first one containing elements of Hong Kong slapstick comedy which I find extremely annoying.
- Casino Tycoon I and II ( 1992-1993 with Andy Lau ) via Netflix Germany with Cantonese audio and very good picture quality. I enjoyed this one quite a lot. A lot of its scenes take place in Macau which I liked a lot. If you are looking for a decent Casino style film from Hong Kong then this is it. Of course it is an entirely different film overall but nonetheless enjoyable.
And many others ...

DATE with an ANGEL (1987) a silly little MICHAEL KNIGHT/EMANUELLE BEART fantasy romcom that was clearly rather influential towards a great deal of Harem/Slice of Life/Romance Anime yet to come...

Is that the TV series with Megan Ward in it? Great show. Another in the 'Why do American TV networks cancel all the good shows?' saga.

Just re-watched Raw Deal (1986) [PILF-1388]I still don't think the transfer is very good, but I'd put it out on par with the Planet of the Apes box set - which isn't really a good sign when those movies at least had the excuse of being 30 years old when the box set came out but I think this is probably the same transfer as the 1986 release at which point the movie had just come out.
