I can't stand Chevy Chase for some reason.

Platoon. This release: https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/20729/PS ... al-Edition

Great LD of an even greater movie. A truly powerful film that captures the Vietnam war.

Yeah I think Platoon is underrated today, visually spectacular and the costuming and battle sequences are really well done. However the retiring Governor General of Australia, Vietnam combat vet General Cosgrove told me once it looked wrong.. Vietnam didn't look that lush or jungle like. I'd guess Platoon was filmed in the Phillipines?

I'd like an LD release of it but the only widescreen ones seem to be a case of "we would have done it like this if we could have" and recoloured. I hate that. I want to see it as it was originally released, I hate revising history. I want the experience of the person at the time seeing it.

It is slightly recolored yes. I've seen it both ways and think this is fine. I would assume all ws releases are the recolor unless there is like a collector or criterion BD with the original transfer. Seems like everyone involved doesn't want the old transfer. But yeah it really is just a great movie. I am very happy with this LD and won't seek out another release.

Watched Men In Black and...surprise...a rotter. Side 1 started with minor rot. About 20 or so minutes in it cleared up until side 3 (the cav closure) which is easily the worst rot I have encountered so far. Constant colored speckling that is distracting.

This is one of the few LDs that I really have to add to my collection. This is such a fantastic film and such a wonderful cover in my view. There is a similar Special Edition from the same period that has additional audio commentaries on the analogue audio tracks.

So how is the picture quality ?

@ forper - you are right. The film was shot in the Philippines and the Vietnam jungle looked quite different than what it did in the film itself. It wasn't that lush. True.

It is a fantastic film. I have seen it at least 10-15 times in my lifetime. They just don't make films like that any longer. Everything is CGI nowadays. Films like Platoon or Gettysburg however improvised a lot and did not use any CGI at all. They gained their strength from the actors' performances, the score, excellent camera work. Platoon is one of those few films that I would like to own in different formats and versions - Platoon Pan&Scan, Platoon THX certifed laserdisc, DVD, Blu Ray, 4k ?, etc.

This laserdisc appears to contain the original Dolby Stereo mix however the most recent Shout Factory Blu Ray release also has it. The last digital release to do so prior to that was the 1997 Live Entertainment US DVD release.

I thought it looked amazing. And I agree with you, I dislike cgi in films.

Don't forget set design and costuming. You really feel immersed in Platoon when you watch it, everythings dripping with atmosphere..you can almost feel the humidity with the characters..the equipment and sets is, as far as I can tell all very accurate...Stone was a vet wasn't he? I guess The Phillipines was the only option to film but he got everything else right. The only director that did Vietnam better was Kubrick, the ultimate perfectionist. I even saw a still frame from FMJ in a history book on Vietnam once with the caption "Marines take cover in streets of Hue"

The last time I saw Platoon was probably casually on TV but I get sucked in every time.

Yes, Oliver Stone served in the Vietnam war.

- IMAX: Space Station on 4K UHD; Excellent video, excellent content, disappointed with Tom Cruise’s narration. Highly recommended.
- Dynasties (BBC Earth) on 4K UHD; One of the best looking 4K UHD discs along with Planet Earth II, perhaps one of the most emotional documentaries. Highest recommendation.
-Waterworld on 4K UHD; Looks gorgeous, I want to try the Arrow Video Blu-ray release for the fan made extended version.
-High Life on Blu-ray: Slow paced but somewhat interesting film. Visuals are great, more of an art house genre in space.
-Mothra on Blu-ray: Looks superb, entertaining to watch.
- The Quick and the Dead on 4K UHD; Sam Raimi’s take on Westerns. Shots are beautifully made, excellent cast, very good acting, somewhat mediocre story but still very entertaining. 4k disc looks stellar.

Watched Disney's Robin Hood. The original US LD which was quite rough around the edges. Probably the worst I've seen in terms of av. Guessing there are plenty of bad early lds.

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums (Zangiku Monogatari)

Another emotionally draining Mizoguchi film. Great stuff though.

I should get this during the Criterion sale but I've burned out after buying 9 movies and the 2 AK eclipse sets. But I will be picking up that in the fall hopefully with Ozu's new film release that is coming out. The Flavour of Green Tea over Rice.

I've had it for awhile and finally opened the BD. The audio is really rough at spots.

Bought since I didn't want to wait. I'm glad so I watch it now.

Eraser. Part of that lot as I wouldn't normally pick up an LD when I have a good BD. Miraculously rot free. Audio isn't great though tbh.

Yeah, I have that too, it’s a pretty crappy LD. Disney released most of their animated movies at least twice and comparing them is often a great lesson in how far LD came in the first decade. Even the first The Little Mermaid wasn’t that great of an LD.

Makes sense. There are some movies I wish got more releases for that reason. I have Robin Hood on BD so I'm good there.

Is the Goodfellas LD alright? Looking to buy it soon if so since it is dirt cheap.

I have no idea. I only own that movie by accident. It’s in my “need to get rid of” pile.

Watched Heavy Metal. Honestly it's pretty terrible. Had some minor rot but plenty watchable with long rot free stretches.

the movie or the disc was terrible? I liked the soundtrack and it was enjoyable but I did kinda of get tired of it and wasn't one of my must keeps so I got rid of it.
