Forgot how epic this movie was.
Back when Disney made fantastic films.......

Amen. if only NADIA would have turned out as good.

i mean, the series WANTED to be, -in it's Anime sort of way- and was keeping pretty decent pace on that goal,
right up until it threw it's cards on the table and walked away buck naked from the beginning of the "Island Episodes"
straight on through to the finale.

Honestly, i haven't seen that very many Anime series begin with such shining promise, yet crash and burn quite so spectacularly hard...

I told you to skip the island episodes. I was in no way joking and I can’t really think of any other show I’d say that about. You have no one to blame but yourself! :) Gypsy too, since I think he chose the same path.

IMO the finale is Yamato-level awesome but if you’ve been sedated by a dozen episodes of torture it may have no affect.

I’ve seen the series more than once. I only watched the island episodes when the US DVD came out (I don’t think VHS fansubs of the island episode ever existed) and never again after that. The series is almost double the length it should be.

The sponsor was the TV station, they wanted episodes. It could have been a toy sponsor, they can ruin *every* episode or cancel the series early. I look at it as an opportunity to finish a good idea that began a decade earlier with Miyazaki working on it. His version (Laputa) was good but it lacks certain things like Nemo and space travel and millennia old telepathic whales.

I also lived through the era when Nadia was on the cover of Newtype or the top of the Animage character poll almost every month (booted out Nausicaa, amazingly) so we were somewhat immersed in original art for the magazines, etc making the whole experience somehow larger for me, larger than some DVDs in a box anyway.

i must have been around 8-9 years old when NADIA hit the Airwaves over there.

all i knew of Anime back then was a little bit of VOLTRON reruns on CATV,
MACROSS, by way of the REVELL ROBOTECH CHANGERS "VEXAR" U.S. localization of the IMAI VARIABLE TYPE Focker VF-1S model kit,
and the great, grand isle of import Mecha models at the hobby shop my dad frequently took me and my mom to,
in pursuit of building up his collection of military Armor and Aircraft kits over several years there.

indeed, while i had no real awareness whatsoever of Anime/Manga proper back then,
you can clearly see where the early second-hand impetus began
that got the OTAKU ball gradually rolling for me, at a fairly tender age and all...

I think it was 90. I didn’t have fansubs until the late 90s though.

yeah the hype for Nadia was big in the '90s due to it being Gainax. I saw a few fan subs of it but never the whole show. Another one of those shows I never got to finish but with my new genlock it is one I will see through the original LD boxset, no compromise. So many shows like this though I don't know when. I need time to digest shows, I can't binge for long. After episode 8 of Orguss I've taken a break, onto disc 3 today.

The movie no doubt. The first one was at least watchable.

^ It's quite inept but good for some laughs at the illogic, and may be funnier if you go in knowing its budget and production backstory.

I recently viewed The Sixth Day which was excellent.

I don't usually slag-off many films but Speed 2 is a bit of a turd.

Catching up on some motorsport is definitely the better option.

Cheers

Worth watching once I'd say for anyone that enjoyed the first and these kind of b grade movies.

I agree. January is recap season and a good reminder of what happened earlier in the year. There are now so many F1 races I never see them all.

Thanks to forper I am halfway through the original "Planet of the Apes" series.....

Nostalgia hit me hard. Forgot how well done the original kickoff was.

That dialogue before Taylor hit the freezer knocked me for a loop.
Profound script.
Suffered through the James Franciscas Beneath 2nd Installment.

Absolutely love the "Escape" part 3 Installment.
The crude treatment of the apes underscores the military/political landscape of the times.

Thanks again forper.... I keyed on your assessment after your recent viewing/review here....

Cheers.....

Just watched Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991) [PILF-7184]

Bit of an unusual movie. Takes place in the (then) near future, but apart from the fictional super drug that plays a role in the story and the ridiculous bulletproof trenchcoats worn by the bad guys, there's not much in the way of "futuristic" elements in the film and for the most part it's basically a modern day western with motorcycles replacing horses.

I must be close to THE Island episodes but I'm at the base at the south pole. I have completely forgotten this show. I did try watching EVA on Net Flix months back but gave up as I couldn't stand the new dub. though I will have to watch my LDs at some point for fun but I'll have to get a genlock device.

Watched LV 32020-2L Hunt for Red October, The (1990),
Had not seen since i watched at the cinema.
Movie still holds up, the LD is quite good, a bit soft overall but cant complain too much about it.
