We all know about the original Star Wars but what about silent movies that are on laserdisc but will not have the same music on dvd. Titles such as Thief of Bagdad with the Carl Davis score & Wings. There are also lots of Pioneer concerts that have never been put on dvd such as Golden Earring & Pink Floyd Delicate Sound of Thunder im sure that laserdisc fan can name many others.

Yes there are many thousands of music concerts that have yet to be re-issued on DVD - I doubt if they will though so grab the laserdisc version before they vanish completely.

Here are a just few movies with great soundtracks that are not available on DVD:
The Wildlife
Rockula
Out of Bounds
Heavenly Bodies
Harley

I doubt A Brighter Summer Day will ever get a new release unless Martin Scorsese manages to get back the rights for it. No real loss for me since I've got the Laserdisc but it's a wonderful film that everyone should watch if they ever get the chance. And seeing it on Blu-Ray with a brand new transfer would be irresistible.

Just remembered Napoleon on laserdisc but due to the score issue.

Napoleon is available on DVD in Germany and it's a pretty decent effort by Studio Canal. Same version as the Laserdisc (Coppola, making it English-friendly) with much less damages but overall softer than the 1984 LD. It's spread over two 9DVDs so it's much better than the hyper compressed Aussie and Hong Kong releases.

Song of the South will never see the light of day.

I suspect a fair number of the cartoons released on ld will never see life again intact (if at all).

The Wizard of Speed and Time may also languish forever.

Coonskin may never get an official (and complete) release on DVD.

Pretty much the same titles I said in this thread:

It Came From Hollywood

Lady and the Tramp: Academy Ratio version

And also some odd titles that were released by Vidmark/Trimark/any other odd VHS releasing company that also got their titles on LD like:

Dark Tide (1993)

Inner Sanctum 2

Cirio H Santiago's Naked Vengeance from 1985 was never reliesed on dvd or laserdisc

A proper reliese of Sho Kosugi's uncut version Pray for death 1985 would have been great

Speedtrap 1977 with Joe Don Baker/Tyne Daly/Robert Loggia was never reliesed on laserdisc or dvd

I know it's technically on dvd, but I wonder if they'll ever do a proper transfer of Day of the Triffids? This is a movie/book I've liked since I was a kid, and to my knowledge, the laserdisc is the only version in the correct aspect ratio.

I acutally think Song of the South will be released one day. If not by Disney then when it reaches the public domain in 2039.

A lot of those old silent movies actually *are* on DVD, but in super low priced gigapacks from Mill Creek or whoever and then tend to look like crap. I just watched "The Golf Specialist" the other day from a 2" thick DVD set and often times heads were out of shot, contrast was a bit weird, I think they made it with a reduction print or something. The Criterion LD is way better, imagine that.

I doubt even Final Approach would make it to DVD or bluray.

I have a collection of around 400 NTSC LDs. About 100 or so are TV series. Of the remaining 300, I bought about 150 of them thinking they would not be released on BD. They are generally junk, b-films, cheap sci-fi etc.. in other words no one except me care about them. On about 50 of them I was wrong. To my surprise they did get nice BD releases(heck even the moontrap got a BD release). Every few months the list is shrinking. I anticipate BD will be around for another 5 years. There is a good chance another 50 or so will be released on BD in the mean time. I am not even using the import market so far. Germans pretty much released any junk film and show from 70s,80s,90s on BD already.

One catch though. For some stupid reason, big studios gave up on catalog titles. They license them to these small studios like twilight time, shout factory etc.. These small guys charge arm and a leg for these junk films($25-40). Twilight time limits them to 3000 copies. Once they run out, people ask $100 or so on them on the bay. I dont know if I want to pay $70 for "enemy mine"?

I can almost guarantee that "Fatal Vision", a great TV movie about the Jeffery McDonald murders will not come to dvd. I think it's mostly a legal issue that prevents it from further distribution in another format. The LD itself is hard to come by. Fortunately I have a copy .

I highly doubt the extended chronological cut of The Godfather Trilogy will ever be rereleased.

what in the world has kept ELECTRIC DREAMS (1984) from seeing light of day in the U.S. in any video format beyond LD, VHS and BETA?

i mean, i've seen EURO and AUS market DVD copies out there, no doubt there are even Asian editions. R1 DVD and/or BRD though? not to my knowledge.

that said, i am ever so glad i pounced on a $40.00USD U.S. LD of the film on the BAY several years ago. i have not seen another since.
i'd love to own the JPN LD as well, -it's cover photo is beautiful, IMHO-
but i doubt i'd want to pay the arm leg and kidney the rare occasional copy on the market probably demands by now...

I just picked up a dvd of Electric Dreams
It was a burned copy I found at a pawn shop
Full screen, to me it looks like the source was probably the laserdisc
Just wish it had captions.
Is the laserdisc captioned for hearing impaired?
