I seriously hope they have a US version and a JP version like they did with ‘54 some time ago. Those movies are usually quite recut and the titles and openings are totally different. These crappy insulting dubs are 50 years old now and and the only way most fans have seen these movies so deserve to be preserved, IMO. Obviously one wants the original too.

This was done with ‘54 a while back on DVD. It works very well. Not every G movie has that many differences though, obviously.

They seem to include everything available when they can. Lone Wolf and Cub includes the U.S. hack job.

That's why I asked about King Kong vs Godzilla, I thought it was supposed to be wrangled up in some rights hell or something and that's why it's only ever been released with the dub so far.

This Criterion BD set is listed on Amazon for $164.99 now.
The packaging looks nice but I suspect it won't be good for the discs.

Well, there’s always a JP version...probably divided into two or more sets that each cost more than this...still cheaper than paying almost that much per movie in some cases on LD back in the day.

Yeah, those single discs new were about 100 bucks each, digital reissues came down to around 50-70 each but always expensive.

I've even seen first issue Japanese DVDs in CD cases that had 90,000Y on them. Very expensive.

I'm not sure if the criterion page has been updated since it was first created (I can't actually recall reading everything I can see there now, but whatever), the info down the bottom of the page seems to indicate most of the movies are Japanese versions, but...
Quote:
the 1956 U.S.-release version of Godzilla; and the 1962 Japanese-release version of King Kong vs. Godzilla, presented with its original 4.0 surround soundtrack.

Quote:
International English-language dub tracks for Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla

Quote:
New English subtitle translations

Wasn't the first movie the only one to actually be edited heavily whereas the rest just got straightforward dubs?

I finally watched the US version of Godzilla some time ago and found it to be rather decent. Normally I'm vehemently against dubs but the fact that they shot entirely new footage with english-speaking actors and edited it seamlessly into the original was rather inspired.

idk about the foreign edits tbh, I seem to recall reading about a substantial Italian edit but I'm not even sure if it was a Godzilla movie.

I think the only dub I ever watched completely was that US one many years ago.

You're not imagining things, I've heard of that too. I think people named it Cozzilla after the guy behind it.

So it was Gojira? I thought maybe it might've been another Kaiju movie or something.

:wtf: OMG how did I not know of this.
Has it ever been released on DVD, I'm sure its worth more than 6th day.
Watching it now on youtube.

Its almost done like the old space invaders, probably projected it through colored gels and then captured it to another film for
distribution.

Someone else posted on youtube but I felt the same way, totally like Moroder with Metropolis.

VHS bootlegs.
Apparently a "restored version" was uploaded to archive.org...I've checked and it still seems to be there so it might be better than the yt version (which everyone says is poor quality).

So, not that I want to watch them but the Police Story set does include the English dubs. They are listed under the extra content on the back of the slip box. Also apparently and alternate version of Police Story 2. Now that I will have to watch.

HK version maybe? It's like 5 minutes longer.

I believe so. It says for the first time from a subtitled Hong Kong release 35mm print.

So from what I understand, the box set has the US version of King Kong vs Godzilla on disc 3, but the Japanese version is on the bonus disc?
