https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/2648- ... -1954-1975?

A bit rich for my blood at $180 pre-order ($225 retail) but this is something I will have my eye on to pick up later. I managed to get the Zatoichi set brand new for $105 and that retailed for $200.

I don’t like the packaging at all, but it is better than when they put what looked like Godzilla 2005 on the box for Godzilla ‘54.

I think the first one that hasn't had a US release but then I don't know what was released in the rest of the world.

While this is very cool I wonder if this will drop the value of the other earlier DVD release by Sony and other companies.

I do hope they release this on DVD, I'll be on the hunt for a used copy either way.

I hope this means the rest can come in a box set even if it is not by Criterion. I think I am only missing 2 of the US BD releases though I want to start on the laserdiscs sometime.

If you are getting them for cover art then you will want to get one or the other, or really the best looking cover of the 2 versions of
Japanese released discs.

When looking for something like Godzilla vs Mothra then this is the best version on LD to ownMothra vs Godzilla: Limited Edition (1964) [TLL 2435]

As for PQ most are the same, they just differ with Digital audio or Analog only.

I know they are not Godzilla films.
The only Toho film that I owned both the analog only and digital remaster was
King Kong vs Mechakong (1967) [TLL 2073]
King Kong vs Mechakong (King Kong Escapes) (1967) [TLL 2386]

The first version actually had better picture quality and was cropped a little more on the remaster.
But the remaster had a really nice sheet with cutouts of some type, I can't remember if they were finger puppets or what right now.

Twice a year barnes and noble and criterion online %50 sales, that’s 4 sales a year. Just buy it in one of these sales and it will be $100.

This is $225 list so wouldn't it be $112.50? But anyway that's my plan. I almost always buy from Criterion directly because it builds me up to $50 coupons per $500 spent. I'd have to get B&N credit at 89% or better to best that, which isn't very likely.

Barnes and noble used to combine coupons so you could go well beyond %50 but right now %50 + another %10 if you are a member. I have been fortunate to be close to New Hampshire where there is no tax. I drive up twice a year and buy a couple of dozen titles. Together with with the member discount, it’s $18 a piece final. Amazon time to time match these sales (not on all titles tho) but amazon has been charging tax for a few years now.

So there is two releases for the LDs? I seem to be missing Godzilla VS Megalon and Godzilla VS Biollante (which I think is the only one I have not seen and apparently rare) BDs

Yes, first pressings are analog only and marked in the top corner Toho Videodisc.

Later pressings are marked in the top corner Toho Laserdisc "digitally remastered" that have analog and digital.
I don't know if they released Biollante or which version they released on DVD but LD had a CAV box and standard CLV release.

Watched my Biolante CAV box a couple of weeks ago and my King Ghidora CAV last night. Damn sweet, never seen all of Vs KG before. The World War 2 scenes and Major Spielberg are classics. And the dorky evil gaijin ahaahaha. Mecha King Ghidora was so awesome! Definitely my current favorite G-film, next to watch is '93 Mothra..never seen any of it before, no spoilers please.

You should stop before you watch the others, KG is really the final in my opinion, I wish I had never bought those later films and just ended on a high note with KG.
Mothra, Mechagodzilla and Destroya are just not worth it.

Original run, 85, Biollante and King Ghidora end.

Post subject:  Re: Criterion Showa Era Godzilla Box Set

okay...hope I find them better than you did..I love the effects and models in the Heisei films, really the peak of practical tokusatsu imo.

Post subject:  Re: Criterion Showa Era Godzilla Box Set

I didn't really warm up to the Heisei movies the same way I did to Showa, but considering the only Millennium era Godzilla movie I actually liked was Final Wars, maybe that says something about my tastes.

One thing I definitely liked better about Heisei was Little Godzilla. He actually looked cute, as opposed to Showa Minilla who looked more like a Turkish ET.

I disagree massively. The 90s Mothra is magical, the way the plots of Mechagodzilla II and Ghidra tie together is one of my favorite things in all of Godzilla.

I’m honestly more of a Heisei era fan in general. I got bored of the CG era stuff and quit watching.

Okay so I watched Mothra '92 on the weekend and I think I'm probably going to share Rein-o's view on the franchise after KG, kind of dissapointed, much more like a kids movie and just average compared to G'84, Biolante and KG. The highlight was watching Yokohama get destroyed. I've been there more than a few times.

This outcome shouldn't be surprising, I was hoping to share SoZ's view but we never agree on anything!

I might go back and watch Showa Mothra for comparison next then it's back to Heisei for the last 3 films..
