I stumbled across this post online about the flaws/errors/issues with the early pressings of the Star Wars Definitive Box Set. Can anyone confirm if this applied to the Japanese LD set as well?

I didn't even know there were issues with them so I will definitely be checking my set.

N.B: If anyone else has the Japanese box set, you can loan a copy of the English book out at most libraries (at least I was able to). The Japanese book is exactly the same as the English one in dimensions, pages, everything (except language of course).

It's a famous document that somehow seems to fade with time from WebArchive, a few copies around but the archived copy I keep here also referenced in Star Wars Trilogy: Definitive Collection [0693-84]

Good work Julien! Do you know if my Japanese version will be affected by these flaws? I can't check at the minute, still waiting for my repaired 925 to be delivered.

I have no idea... it's based on the US sets and I never had one.

I believe I've read that the Japanese set is fine and only affects the US release but not 100% sure memory is bad on this one.

My copy has laser rot for the Star Wars Definitive Boxed set, the USA release. Not sure if it is the reissued version that is not missing the scene of Leia Welding. But i have the identical Japanese Set with George Lucas the creative Impulse and there is no laser rot.

:eh: the flaws mentioned are about the missing seconds on the first run as opposed to the second run.
And if the USA and Japanese boxes both have the same flaw of missing footage.

Your flaw is something different and isn't really about this topic.

But please post pictures of your issue, I'm starting to think more and more rot reports could actually be lasers going bad

I literally just checked my Japanese edition. Disc 2 Side 3 of Empire.

Sure enough it starts with yer wan doing a bit of welding. Looks perfect.

I can only assume it is a later pressing as it doesn't have the welding flaw?

Picture and sound is superb too (to be a real pedant it does look a bit pixelated some times). Absolutely zero rot, flawless picture.

The obi strip says PILF-1757 if that helps? Here is a.photo of it from my box set:

You should look at the mint marks.

Would Mint Marks matter?

I have a PILF-1757 set too. Checked the 2nd ESB disc, Leia welding is there. Had to translate "yer wan"..

If it matters the info or "mint mark" on the actual disc is: 4710G126 PILF-175702-D01-P

I know this edition gets dissed over apparantly superior JP releases but it gives me so much joy. It's how I remember the films from childhood (No CGI) and it looks better than then. The THX sounds incredible and sound is 50% of these movies.

I don't care that there are a million obsessive nerds that put the films on pedestal that Zeta hates, I love these movies because I saw and loved them when I was a kid. And I had all the toys and it was just superlative as a kid. Star Wars was better than anythin in the '80s. Yeah that's nostalgia but I don't care, at least I don't feign nostalgia like some 20 year old who thinks the original films are the best.

What if that 20 year old saw those films when he was a kid? Would they not still be nostalgic?

i too became an instant SW nerd on the spot when my folks bought all three movies on CBS/FOX VHS back in the late-80's when i was still around 7/8 years old.

i loved the movies so much i watched them as often as my mom would allow.
my mom was a Finch Fancier back then. she had a like-minded friend
that happened to have a large SW toy collection her kids outgrew lying around, and she offered it to us for like $50.

so, there i was, a freshly-minted hardcore SW fanboy, complete with an instant-turn-key well-rounded SW toy collection.

i recall that the AT-AT Pilot was my favorite figure back then,
and my mom gave me the old MPC/ERTL AT-AT model kit she had put away a few years back,
so i picked up the "BLACK SERIES" AT-AT PILOT figure to accompany the finished model;

my dad also happened to come across the BANDAI 1/72 INCOM X-WING at a HOBBY LOBBY he was bumming about one day, and ended up picking one up for me;

There was a topic once where someone posted pictures and compared versions, the Japanese CAV 2 disc sets and
USA FOX widescreen releases which were the same masters as the CAV sets.

These box sets are great but they did have more DNR and I think they were slightly darker???
Since I have the FOX issues I've been happy with them, had the Faces and while they were nice at the time I was able to sell them for more money
than the originals, I'm happy I kept what I did and sold what I did at the time.

As long as you are happy with the collection of these 3 that's all that really matters.

CAV versions would be three discs, not two. It sounds like you're talking about the pre-THX releases.

forper wrote:

I'd imagine they'd be different and better way to tell apart the corrected and uncorrected copies than the catalogue number.

And tasuke, why do you always post the same photos?
