Yes that is what I have noticed as I’m a listener.

Titles that I have noticed with missing sound effects and lacking low end!

STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE (1979) is much watched title on Laserdisc sometimes thou I don’t mind the DVD/Bluray versions that was released a few years ago its the missing sound effects and some botched up additional sounds being added to the “so called originals” maybe Paramount Pictures, should buy a Collins dictionary book and look up the word Original because no one seems capable of producing a DVD or bluray that is true mirrored version to the theatrical English release print.

I [sigh], feel better now after the short rant.

Missing sound effects in STAR TREK 1 is where Sulu presses a button on the helm panel to set the Enterprise to hover over the intruder at “500 meters” just before McCoy exits the bridge Sulu press a button that is heard to stage left channel or an off-screen sound effect.

Listen to the laserdisc and you’ll hear it! Listen to the so called perfect HD format that kiddies have been jealously defending for the past several years, who know doubt have perforated hearing loss!
Yes the DVD and bluray waste is a waste of bit...010001..space!

The other annoying sound in the film is when Kirk, calls the engineering and Sooty’s voice WTF is echoing on the bridge as if they inside the Grand Canyon! SIGH who ever did this STAR TREK 7.1 needs to be shot on sight!

STAR TREK II THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982) so far only has a missing sound effect and a possible lack of low end that doesn’t seem to mirror the blow-up Dolby 6-track 70mm release print.
Missing sound effect is a hard one to spot it’s a faint soft electrical noise crackle a kinder of sparking sound that is heard in the transporter room when Kirk and crew beam back onboard. Its heard off to stage left channel just before Spock says “I exaggerated”.

Oddly so, you can hear this sound effect on German track in DOLBY STEREO matrix only.
Yes never give up the old shiny Laserdisc for the sakes of HD its a con and waste of time most of the time particularly with older classic films.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981) “call me snake”. Classic cult film! The thing that I noticed with DVD was the line “he’s dangerous, sir”. Was now centred rather than panned to the stage right and dialogue panning is such a cool feature in films it creates realism.

The other annoying thing was the ending when Snake pulls the tape cassette apart and pulls the tape spools while snapping the tape and tossing it away seems to be missing?

If you listen hard to one of the two audio commentator tracks the one with producer late Debra Hill, in the background you can hear the tape being snapped! So what a botched-up DVD special edition and it’s not special it’s existed before on Laserdisc!

I’m not interested in buying the bluray version as Snake said in ESCAPE FROM L.A (1997)
The more things change. The more they stay the same.

One The film were mixed recode and released in DOLBY and I want Snake in DOLBY trueHD not dts hd master audio, its about trade names that making films sound better and DOLBY as been the leader for over 40 years!

STAR TREK V THE FINAL FRONTIER (1989) bass reduction seems like the bass has been reduced and its the same up and down for the second edition DVD and bluray. The first edition is close but the Laserdisc hits the mark for Klingon belching low end!

When I saw the film, being premiered with a one day only exclusive 70mm DOLBY THX presentation at the CIC/Empire Leicester Square, the audience laughed so hard when the Klingon beaching was not only heard but reverberated like a mild earthquake!!! That was some Klingon low end!
The DVD and bluray are just hopeless unless you have a frequency analyzer and looked though all the language track versions you‘ll notice the German track has more Klingon belching low end!
The Laserdisc is intact! Also other sound effects like when the shuttle craft going to “the God planet” some scenes where the shuttle appears out of the mist has some neat cool low end that is simply lacking low end authority on DVD/bluray, bluray what a misleading format!

I don't think there are any snags with VHS tape or even widescreen versions that I still have.

I still find it tough to believe that you remember the sound mixes from every movie you've ever seen in a theater.....

I believe it. I can't do that but my son can. It helps some that he's a foley sound tech for the film studios.
