I've perfect playback copies of all of those titles. Two of those titles I mention can also suffer from rot and may or may not be sticky: Richard Marx: Hold On to the Nights [TOLW-3041] Quireboys: A Bit of What You Fancy [TOLW-3046] I therefore don't think there is any direct correlation between sticky discs and rotted discs. Discs with sticky edges play fine unless you are really unlucky and own a sticky disc which is also rotted which can happen! There are a few other TOLW series LDs that could be rotted that were not sticky. Iron Maiden: Maiden England (1989) [TOLW-3042]Tina Turner: Simply The Best - Videos (1991) [TOLW-3099]After I clean a sticky disc or at least remove as much of the excess glue as possible I always use new poly bags which do not have any traces of glue residue in them. I will periodically change these poly bags again to help minimize the transfer of any further glue deposits to the actual surface of the disc through a contaminated bag. So I believe the leak may continue but is far less severe after the bulk of the exceess glue has been removed. The glue is so sticky that I don't think the discs will ever fall apart - at least not in my lifetime!

Like yourself I am not too bothered by this and just tend to leave them if it is not to excessive.

For bonding the two halves of a disc together, most LaserDisc pressing plants used Pilobond 20 or one of its variants from the time. The Pilobond is a viscoelastic glue that is waterproof and forms a very strong bond between the two surfaces. The Pilobond was adopted in an attempt to get a handle on the rot problem, which became truly severe from 1984 to 1986 (the very mainstream Video Magazine even did an article about it, prompting Pioneer to drop their advertising for six months - The Perfect Vision reprinted a Disc Deals article on rot and Pioneer cancelled all its ad's for a year). In an attempt to clean up the mess, Pioneer and Image went through their existing inventory to try and rid it of the titles that showed a higher than normal number of rotted discs - that's when lots of titles were dropped from the respective catalogs, sometimes not to reappear until reissued as widescreen or digital releases many years later.
Instead of a sprayed or rolled on glue, 3M used a pre-formed glue-sheet to bond the two disc sides together. Although the edges were cleaned up before packaging, the strong compression applied when the discs were pressed together caused the glue-sheet to ooze from the outside edges - sometimes for many years - and it will often get all over the disc surface. I have one 3M made disc, Dressed To Kill, that finally stopped oozing the glue-sheet after 20+ years of owning it.

I don't see where a sticky edge would cause problems, well, it can, here we go.
For starters, the discs I've found with the glue-spill, the glue isn't really viscous. It's sticky, it stays put..it's...sticky as anything I've encountered. Therefore, I don't see where the glue is going to go flying out with the high velocity of the disc spin.
The edges of the disc also don't really, touch anything. I can image if you put the edge RIGHT to the side of the tray, and really pressed it there, you might jam/break the loading mechanism....but I don't think the stuff is that strong for the small amount of surface area exposed.
So the edge of the disc doesn't actually come in to contact with anything inside the player (that I can tell). So, from a technical standpoint, I can't see where it would hurt, just makes it difficult to remove from the cover.

OK... I've seen sticky edges on some TOLW-* (notably the Iron Maiden) but they play fine. This one however, leaked so much glue that I can't even remove the cover. Is there a way to safely remove the glue or is the disc a lost cause? Attachment:

I had that box set once and it was the worst I've ever seen, took a long time to clean all discs. I think that set was notorious for having the leaking issue, or all the sets I saw had leaking. Took a lot of work and you aren't going to get perfect discs after, but they will play. Use Lighter Fluid, in the USA its Ronson, don't know what it is in other countries. Don't get it inside the layers or on the label, it will probably take an hr each side or disc if its that bad. You could use alcohol too but the real thing to use is Bestine, its a rubber cement glue thinner/remover, are supply stores sell it. Good luck and show us pics when you are finished. Edit: goo gone would also work but I think there is a smell or it leaves an oily finish after that you have to clean. Haven't used it in years so can't remember, one of them I used as I've tried them all leaves an oil finish. Goo gone or possibly something else that had orange in it?

Attachment: IMG_9087.JPG Attachment: IMG_9088.JPG Julien As that looks like the Madonna Certain Sacrifice/Sex Rape LD it is fairly sought after, quite scarce, so surely worth trying to save. I have not had to use anything other than mild soapy water to clean grubby LDs in the past with the exception of a few really soiled discs with permanent pen marks & what appeared to be an oily residue which all came off with some iso. One LD though pressed by MPO France cracked like crazy paving when I tried the iso on it, some iso may have got to the edge but I was trying not to let it near the sides. That is some amount of glue to have got to the surface of the disc & looks like a bit of a challenge to get it all off, hope it is retrievable. Good luck .

For any easy-to-find disc, it would go straight to trash but this one deserves trying an exorcism! jd213 wrote: since you're in Japan maybe try some ラベルはがしスプレー From the videos on YouTube is looks like exactly like what the name implies: label remover, light splay to dissolve sticky glue. Even DAISO sells it, will give it a try. Julien

Julien Good luck with the "exorcism" Julien. Would be interesting to hear how you get on with it. Hope you can get is into a playable state. If you have not seen it I would think you will watch it once only, still an interesting LD release though with quite a back story to it. Again good luck .

I watched the 2nd commercial release and, yes, it's pretty ugly/cheap movie student's project. But it has some kind of unpolished/amateur look. Probably the kind of movie quality I would produce if I ever tried! Had the the re-release but sold it to try to locate the recalled one, it's much cooler to own was recalled and re-released as Julien
