nissling wrote: Interesting to see such good geometry on a CRT. It's very rare to my experience but it depends on many factors of course. I calibrated the tv (Philips 28PW9551 HD Prepared) 8 years ago with the Avia dvd. I did it during daylight with the tv at least an hour on first. The same during at night. It was pretty elaborate! Note: When you type the code 062596 i+ for getting to the service ( SAM) menu it won't just be saved what you are doing. You have to unplug any scart and if i recall also the other connections but use only rf cable. It has got to have a valid rf signal, for example of a vcr or ld player that has an video rf output and while playing in order for the sam menu to be saved. I had my marantz dv 6500 attached via component and when i was finished calibrating, i had to unplug and choose av input antenna with the sam menu still visible with input from in my case just some vcr tape (Little Earthquakes ) in order to have the changes saved. Before you do this, you have to be absolutely sure what you are doing. For example write down the present adjustments before changing anything. That way, you can just change it all back. Also never hit the clear or reset option. The tv is a 16:9 tube. The reset causes to default to 4:3. Because the tv isn't 4:3 the tv gets into protection mode and won't start anymore. Your tv is gone then. Since tubes are no more, i would be surprised if some technician would install the firmware again.

And of course the very few cd/cdv only players like mentioned earlier in this thread . Pioneer PD-707V Sony CDP 301V Yamaha CDV-S100 Yamaha CDV M-777 Sharp QT-93CV (Boombox) Philips CDV-185 (only pal) But with those you're stuck with Pal or NTSC, so yes the multiplayer, (ntsc/pal) cd/cdv/ld players are the safest bet; Pioneer CLD-D925 being a nice one.

I take it that all 3 players can play a CD-Video disk. Correct me if I am wrong. Any Pioneer that starts with "CLD" will play them, I think. As long as it had a 5" tray, just stick the thing in there and hit Play. If it's not compatible it will just play the audio tracks. If it is compatible it will play the video, then the audio tracks. Btw, unless your player is really solid, playback of CDVs is usually quite loud. That disc is FLYING in there.

Well, currently the only one of my 3 players that I would trust playing a 5" disc is the CLD-980. My other 2 players love to hold onto the 5" disc. They will not release the disc onto the tray when the eject button is pushed. It seems that the spindle clamp is sticky causing the disc to hang up. A 12" LD has enough weight to make it fall off onto the tray. I have tried cleaning the surface of the clamp win IPA and have had no success. As a result, I do not play CD's in the CLD-D406 or the MDP-600. If I did, I would need to remove the cover of the player in order to extract the CD. Not a very convenient thing to have to do. When I get my CD-Video, I will try the CLD-980 first to see what happens. I did try a normal CD in it and it played and ejected as normal.
UPDATE: I got the CD-Video in the mail. I put it into my CLD-980. The player recognizes it as a CD; but, will not play it. I can play the audio tracks okay (they are being played on my HD-DVD player as I write this.)
This make me wonder: What does the CD-VIDEO logo on the CLD-980 mean? Is there another format that it is referring to?

signofzeta wrote: What CDV is it, specifically? The front says "SOUND+VISION PLUS". The CD says "CD VIDEO", "NTSC" and its copyrighted 1989. The artist is David Bowie. The manufacturer appears to be RYKO. The tracks are: Audio 1) John, I am only dancing. 2) Changes 3) The Supermen Video 4) Ashes to Ashes That is all I can see that maybe of significance. Any ideas? Cancel the above. I tried to play a normal CD in the CLD-980 and IT WOULD NOT PLAY. So, the problem is not the CD-VIDEO; but, the player. I tried an 8" LD and the player worked okay, so I wonder what has happened to the CD part of the player. It appears that the CD-VIDEO that I bought is now a curiosity that I cannot play the video part of it. I will shelve it for now.

The Bowie video is nice. It pops up from time to time for exactly 10$ taken out of the cd collection box . The CLD-980 was a Christmas or birthday gift from my late mother 25+ years ago. I am only keeping it for nostalgic reasons. The Bowie video costs me $6.99 plus $4.00 shipping so its cost is in line with what you found. Until I can figure out how to play the video on it, I am stopping my purchases of further CD-VIDEO disks for now. (I had my eye on a Dire Straits one too.)

It's weird that it doesn't play the video. Sadly I have no idea why this would be the case since I'm not familiar with the player. The good news is that CDV was a horribly underutilized format and half them have rotted so you aren't missing much of anything by not being able to play them.

vinylcollector wrote: Does anyone have "The Eyes Of The Wind" CDV? Grunstein/Srole/Hoppe: Eyes of the Wind (1987) [080 016-2]I have one comming but don't know much about it. Looks like I will only be able to play the audio tracks though, which is still ok. Yes, I have that very disc. I bought it basically because it was the cheapest 5" CDV I'd ever found for sale ($1) and I wanted at least one in that format. My disc has some rot, but it plays the all tracks fine in the LD player and it plays the audio-only ones in a cd player too. Pretty underwhelming music.

I know a Dire Straits one that fits the subject: "Money for Nothing!" hehehe No, just kidding. Most cdv's go for way too high on eBay and the Pal ones could have rot. But to have a few ones is always nice. Try to find the ntsc ones and vsd's (also ntsc).

Before I got my CDV, I put a normal CD in my CLD-980 and tried to play it. The chapter indicator went from 0 to 1 so I thought the player was all right. (The player was not hooked up to my amp then). It was a surprise to me when the CDV did not play. I then tried a normal CD again and it did not play. Maybe the CLD-980 had a good moment with the first CD; but, not after that(?). Do the VSD's have a particular outside labeling so you can recognize them?
