Looks like I will only be able to play the audio tracks though, which is still ok. Yes got it, it is new age music, the video clip looks like it is shot in death valley by a helicopter flying over the landscape

Regarding the transition from Laservision to Laserdisc, I recently got a copy of Capricorn [KILA 2] that despite having a Laserdisc logo has no digital sound or chapter stops. Kind of lame for 1991, IMO. While I'm sure there was some logic to these designations at the time, they don't seem to mean much now. You can find the logos and features in almost any combination other than Discovisions with digital sound (since it hadn't been invented yet) and CDVs with analog only sound (since its impossible).

The seller only had a picture of the cover, and not the disc. Anyways to my supprise my disc is NTSC and the video track plays pretty good, a few odd speckles some parts, but nothing major. The disc does say made in UK. Here is a pic of the disc.

Bought a NOS cd/cdvideo-only player last week, especially to play these. Because everytime it feels a little scary to put a cdv in the huge ld player, despite the smaller included extra cd tray Only disadvantage is that the Philips CDV 185 can only play Pal, while my LD player D925 can play also NTSC. However it appears there were also 5 NTSC cd/cdv only players: Yamaha CDV S100, Yamaha CDV M-777, Pioneer PD-707V, Sony CDP 301 V and the Sharp QT 93V. But then you'd have to put a 240V transformer in it, or use a currency downstep trafo from 230 to 100V).

One note, I am pretty sure there is also a Japanese NTSC model of the CDV-185. I kind of thought they were PAL/NTSC, but if you say your 185 won't play NTSC, I guess I was wrong!

What would that NTSC Philips one look like? Very peculiar though, when you pop in an ntsc cdv, it says ntsc disc on the screen and then goes to the audiotracks;. (And in case of a vsd plays 4 seconds without video and then just stops after mentioning it's a cdv). A pity it hadn't the circuity to play it, like the multiplayers that also arrived mid eighties did . Attachment:

There's one on ebay right now. What i found on internet but also mainly this forum, that there were a couple of ntsc 'cdv-only counterparts' but from different brands like: - Yamaha CDV S-100 - Yamaha M-777 - Pioneer PD-707V - Sony CDP 301V - Sharp QT 93V

Today i got the Pal test cdv PV789032 in the mail. The video parts are: white, black, black to white bars, colo(u)r bars, dot pattern, grill pattern. This means, the test cdv's are the only 5" laserdiscs that have more than one videochapter! (Being tracks 29 ~ 34 on this disc) Also in the audioparts, they use pregaps before the tracks or negative indices and onscreen it is displayed as P on Philips cdv 185, so for example ) 01 P 0:01The audioparts are classical music excerpts, wobbly tones and left right channel tones, low and higher tones. On my cdv 185 the black to white and color bars look checker boardy. On my CLD D925 there is also some horizontal colorbanding with the color bars. Both are connected via scart, i could test both with a sturdy composite cable and the cld d925 via s video, what that would be like. Next photo's are taken from a crt and are hard to see, my fuji w3 has cushion distortion when zoomed in, hard to expose right, but this is just to give an idea: cdv 185: And the cld d925: You can clearly see the differences between the test patterns on the surface of the cdv : I've got them here to see them bigger.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - Theatrical Teaser & Trailer [LPR-036] & [VSD-001] have a total of 3 video chapters - the Carolco logo, the Teaser Trailer and then the Full trailer.

Interesting - but why didn't they put any sort of a resolution chart on it? (edit 5/14: They're not just useful for resolution, but very good ringing/ghosting tests. Very important for determining the overall quality of your player - or decoder - system )

happycube wrote: Interesting - but why didn't they put any sort of a resolution chart on it? Would have been nice to see how well that one would fare, but given the medium i don't think too much of it compared to a well mastered 8" cav test disc. It is nice to be able to just adjust the very basic lightning and color i guess for those very few 5" cdv only (Pal just one) players as you would rather use the 8" test discs for the ld players. And the wobbling spacy sound tests are definitely a joke. For just pcm stereo there is also not much need for tests either. You just plug in stereo to an amp without much hassle. For surround sound that would have been different where you would want to adjust the distance and loudness of the different speakers. But then again one would do that in the surroundreceiver itself with the test tone of the receiver, or in a respective 6ch. analogue out player in that player. Dts could have been implemented technically, but at the shortlived time for 5" cdv, dts just was not implemented yet at the time they have been around. Though of course you could pop in a later dts audio test cd, because it has digital out.
