For anyone who doesn't know Madchester was a music scene that developed in Manchester in the UK towards the end of the 1980s and into the early 1990s.
The music that emerged from the scene mixed alternative rock, psychedelic rock and dance music.

There is an interesting set of music laserdiscs covering bands from this period:

I have some others as well such as Stone Roses, James etc - just need to find them in my collection!

Yes top left is a New Order LD.

The best and rarest New Order laserdisc is the bottom right one - entitled pumped full of drugs. It is a live concert in Tokyo in 1985. I love that concert.

Agree, I found this concert (Pumped Full of Drugs) on DVD (more than likely illegal digital transfer) in Lima, Peru for 25 cents. Was extremely well done with PCM sound. Never picked up the LD, after this find. Used this concert footage to produce high quality videos with remastered sound.

Yes likely a dub from the original laserdisc if from South America!

I've bought quite a few original music laserdiscs from collectors in South America in the past. Laserdisc seems to have been popular there.

I don't think LD's were very popular in South America, but would suspect with black market merchants producing unreleased DVD's from LD's.

Yes that is what I meant by 'popular'!

Actually I've obseved that Ebay regulations in South America seem to be a world onto their own. Sellers can list really obvious copies for sale and Ebay does not raise an eyebrow. In the UK similiar such listings would be pulled in a matter of minutes.

The black market doesn't really impact true collectors though as they will always desire original items and not counterfeit fakes regardless of where they were produced.

I don't look at it in terms of original or counterfeit. I and many others only care about the quality. Besides, what's the difference, if the artist doesn't have control over the material, sound engineer/remaster, etc. It's just another recording owned by some label or labels that only care about the $$$$$, not the quality, unless it makes them more $$$$$. So what is a true collector? I consider myself a true collector, because it's all about the quality of the video and sound, not the wrapper or source.
It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

That Morrissey Live in Dallas LD was also released in the US. I actually ran across a copy in a bookstore in the Dallas area, but didn't buy it as it didn't appeal to me.

Perhaps my favourite band from Manchester is Durutti Column who were also signed to Factory Records during the 80's.

Amazingly two laserdiscs of Durutti Column are actually available:

Image

The first is a Japan only release of a very intimate concert filmed in Tokyo in 1985 called Domo Arigato. This was also released as a live album. This is a beautiful recording.
I have the Japan CD of this live album but the audio doesn't seem to be the same as the laserdisc and I prefer the laserdisc version.
Durutti Column: Domo Arigato - Live in Tokyo (1985) [COLY-3005]

The second is a 5" CDV pressed only in France featuring a short film in collaboration with the dance group DV8 called 'When the World' + 3 audio tracks.
Durutti Column: When The World [FACDV 194]

You'll find it listed here - there are actually 2 editions:
James: Come Home Live [VALP-3253]
James: Come Home-Live 1983 [VALJ-3253]

One is a later re-issue although the '1983' part in the title which someone submitted is wrong!

This is my personal favorite scene in all of music. I'm glad to know these things exist since I can now add them to my list and maybe some day actually find them.

The little diddy used to segue the videos on Substance, I think its called "The Happy One" is one of my favorite New Order tracks of all time. Its nice to know it exists somewhere with digital sound!

Ok; I just didn't find them in the "Music Artists" catalogue.
Maybe it was '1993' reissue..
I think it is not available on DVD. There is a "new" box set called "The gathering sound" and I think it have a DVD with this concert with another one.

It requires at least one LD to be described as "video clips" or "live concert" to show up in the music section :-)
