Post subject:  Anybody else out there trying to do 'bit perfect' audio cap?

Hi there,

I have a bunch of music discs I'm trying to back up. I'm happy with the video capture at this point, and the audio isn't bad either. However, I would prefer to grab the digital audio stream if at all possible. I'm using a Windows 10 PC. Any suggestions for hardware and software?

On another note, I think that some DVD recorders got released outside of North America that have a digital audio input. That would simplify things if I could just get a dvd recorder that recorded digital audio. Anyone have any first hand experience with one of these models? I would think the Japanese market especially would get these, but information is limited in english.

Thanks for any insight.

-Jeff

When I had a Hi-MD walkman, MZ-RH1 I used to capture perfect PCM from LDs.

I'd recommend getting a dedicated PCM audio recorder like a Hi-MD device or a new HDD based system.

Hmm that link doesn't work.

I wish I still had that HiMD recorder because I now want to capture PCM off LD to my PC. What is the most straightforward (and cheapest!) way to do this these days?

I use an M-audio 2496 and Sound Forge. Has worked great for 15 years now, even for AC3 tracks if you have a demodulator. Dunno if this will work on Windows 10,though. And you might have to get a 2496 from ebay. Fanres (theypprobably just need to update their security certificate, try again later maybe) or originaltrilogy.com probably has threads with other recommendations.

Thanks, sounds like a higher end setup. I'm on Windows 7

Would something like this do the job?

Anything with a TOSLINK or SPDIF will do the job. There are approximately 180,000 Windows programs that can record audio. Windows probably already comes with everything out of the box.

Not necessarily, some devices internally resample the audio. Here's a thread on Fanres with a way to test the input : https://forum.fanres.com/thread-2686.html
There's also a thread in the same sub-forum about PCM capture.

Well in order to get the true sound you should just play your LD and stop being a copy pirate.

Not sure if you're serious..I already own the LD, how is duplicating the audio for personal portable use pirating?

As long you as you own the original LD, and that the copy is for your own private usage, it's not a pirate copy.

I did a Digital Audio rip of Prince: Lovesexy Live (1988) [080 844 1] before selling my PAL LD player. I still own the LD even though I can't play it anymore.

Toslink Output 44.1KHz/16bit like the original soundtrack straight to Toslink USB recorder on my laptop. No modification.
Turned it into FLAC (~244MB) for normal play and compressed for mobile listening.

Of course

Similar to what I want to do. I made a few beautiful PCM copies of LDs to my old HiMD unit. Clapton live in Hyde Park was a highlight.

I sold the HiMD walkman for big money 5 years ago and have missed it ever since. I may finally step into the DAP world and want to try to replicate the HiMD experience..

Dear lord,

Piracy of 20-40 year old crappy versions of movies or music? I hope your are kidding. I'm just trying to preserve some of this old crap before all of my discs and players completely die. Not to mention make it a little easier to access. All the stuff I'm capping is on youtube anyways. Just prefer to have it from the original discs I watched 30 or so years ago.

I hope you are. Do you seriously think Youtube videos have uncompressed bitstream audio?

That made me laugh today

This is what others need to think of when they ask how to copy star wars.
But now that it's coming out on 4KHD we are all saved :wtf:

No more copy pirates asking how to bootleg films they don't own the rights to.

While Blu Ray has surpassed LD audio quality especially if you've got a ton of speakers and a nice setup, LD digital sound is still nice if you don't have all that. It's literally CD audio :)

But there are so many mixes on LD that will never exist on Blu Ray, let alone in remastered form to fully take advantage of BD's capabilities. Therefore a solid PCM setup is still essential in 2020.

I'll take solace in knowing you can complain about that and not keep buying those blu-rays anyway just to throw them in your cat's sh!tbox.

I only have 1 or 2 left from my stupid mistake on upgrading to Bluray.
Need to blow them out on ebay so others can put them in their cat shitbox.
