Does Napalm Death qualify?

Napalm Death: Live Corruption (1990) [TELP-48028]

Can't seem to find any Entombed, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Deicide or Morbid Angel on LD.

Eventually: 3-Way Thrash: Live in London '89 (1989) [TELP-48013]

Isn’t Death Metal kinda...newer than LD? There’s probably a Slayer LD, does that count?

What I mean is, if your band formed in 1990 and the first release was a 7” they made 250 copies of then you were not a band that would have been in a position to release even a VHS let alone an LD. Virtually every music LD was issued on a major label and during LD’s life death metal had little to no recognition from mainstream society and therefor wouldn’t be able to come up with the $250,000+ it would take to properly film a concert and get it pressed. Death metal bands are poor, and many from countries where LD didn’t exist.

The main reason I don’t have many music LDs is that I was never really into Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Winger, Kenny G, Motley Crüe etc and that’s the majority of what exists; mainstream crapola. When there are LDs of timeless acts like Chet Baker or The Damned they are borderline embarrassing late period stuff or in the case of New Order and The KLF...rotters.

If you were to reduce it to just “metal” you’ll find a lot of JP issues of terrible very very bad MTV bands like Bullet Boys or Poison but to my knowledge no Helloween, Gamma Ray...there must be good Maiden LDs, right?

I was thinking Black Metal instead of Death Metal, but I think they're more or less the same in this regard; neither genre received any kind of mainstream recognition that'd result in a laserdisc release, until well after the format's death.

Zeta's mention of Slayer made me look them up and it seems they're the only one of the "big four" of thrash metal to not have a LD release!

I think Slayer is Trash Metal. And no Slayer LD. I know, surprising.

Heavy got all the mainstream groups (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Judas Priest, Motorhead, X Japan, WASP, AC/DC, etc.).

Less popular style/bands were probably more at home on audio and VHS tapes for the low cost of replication.

Well, there are a few... like the two japanese Sepultura LDs:

Sepultura: Under Siege - Live in Barcelona (1992) [APLG-4003]
Sepultura: Third World Chaos (1995) [APLG-4005]

Managed to get my hands on both a couple of years ago and they're pretty good! Apart from that... well, there's the ND disc that Julien mentioned before, but they're a Grindcore band (they had something of a "Death Metal phase" during the mid/late 1990s with albums like "Harmony Corruption" and "Utopia Banished"). There were a few more exotic LD releases from bands like Running Wild or Celtic Frost and others but they are pretty hard to find these days:

Running Wild: Death or Glory Tour (1989) [TELP-48008]
Celtic Frost: Live at Hammersmith Odeon [TELP-48021]
Gwar: Live from Antartica (1990) [TELP-48025]
Coroner: No More Color Tour '90 (1990) [TELP-48014]
Sabbat: End of the Beginning [TELP-48029]

If anyone's knows where to find one of those for a reasonable price feel free drop me a note...

It's kind of surprising that even some of the major ones have so few. I think Metallica has only like three unique titles overall?

You should define what you mean for "reasonable". I sold most of them some months ago though

Celtic Frost? Those lads did the famous Manga Video promo music song! I need that LD now...

The Heart Beneath should be instantly recognisable.
