I connected the optical cable to my receiver ,and I can hear audio from Dolby audio ok.

but when I use a DTS disk I do not hear anything.

Is something wrong with the lx-600u player?

Thanks, Peter

It should, sounds like you are doing something wrong somewhere.
I haven't had a DTS disc in over 10 years but when I did I was able to use players like a 3070 which is older than your 600.

I think if I remember correctly you need to select your digital audio on your amp to get that digital from your optical.
You can't have it on auto, it has to be that digital channel on your amp.

First make sure the LD has DTS 5.1 with the warnings on the jacket, this would be decoded as DTS bitstream. DTS surround is normal stereo audio with simulated surround added, this would be decoded as normal PCM bitstream.

You need to have everything set correctly depending on what your receiver needs.

On my Receiver, i hit 'sur.decode' , and toggled thru auto, cinema, dsur , etc
but still no audio.
The LD Disk is 'vertigo', and it says DTS on the jacket.
anything else i can try?

I don't have time to read your manual.
I see on the back there are 2 toslink INs, or I assume they are INs.
One says 7 TV the other says 3 music.
Are these to find the selector on the front or on screen menu?? Did you try both, one first then the other?
Seems like you need to find out if the amp will find it OR do you need a DTS decoder that may not be built in for non DVD or non Bluray devices???
Wonder if that's the issue.

Dumb question, but which audio track have you selected on your player?

If the jacket has a warning across the top stating DTS 5.1 and requiring a decoder then it is DTS 5.1 encoded. If it does not have this and just has DTS surround on the jacket without the warning bar on the front top it is PCM stereo encoded. Vertigo does have a DTS 5.1.

After that you have to select DTS decoding on your receiver, you'll need to read your manual for that. Should work fine with an optical connection.

If you have it running through toslink it shouldn't matter from what I remember, its not like AC-3 where you must select the correct channel.
Your amp should pick it up, Kurtis is right on how it should be but I think its an issue with A/V amp or not selected properly?

When I had some DTS discs and toslink connected it was on all the time you needed to find and select it on the amp, my old amp had
analog, digital or auto, would never get any digital with auto and it had to be manually selected on digital.

But the real answer is \yes the LX-600U supports DTS if all other is connected and selected properly.

Do we know for sure that this player works with DTS? Every Pioneer with TOSLINK/SPIF supports DTS, even ones built before DTS was invented, but do Panasonics? I’ve never had one.

All LD players that have a Coaxial and/or Optical PCM output can pass the DTS codec so long as the disc you have actually has the codec embedded on it.

So, are you sure you have this version of Vertigo?.....

Image

..... or this one?......

Image

If you have the former, you have the correct disc.

Also, on your AV Receiver, it appears your only choice of input sections is "Audio 1" or "Audio 2" for the optical input so make sure your player is plugged into either one of them and see if it works. Also, it appears that your AV Receiver also has a "DTS Mode" option (look on page 153 of your manual) and see if switching between Mode 1 or Mode 2 makes a difference.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I have the first DISK, and it worked years ago with different equipment.
Over the weekend I will try a different DTS LD.

Ah so we have narrowed it down to the integrated amp.

Unless someone snuck in a non-DTS disc inside the DTS jacket :)

OP - just read the manual for your AVR. On some AVRs you can assign different digital audio inputs to video inputs. On some this fixed, you need to select the right input which has the right digital input assigned.

There shouldn’t be any difficulty at all in getting the amp to see the signal if it’s actually there. I’m more inclined to think it’s something else.

Once when I had a slipping issue with my CLD-99 it would do almost everything right EXCEPT that DTS was no longer recognized by my amp. If it slipped too much on startup the DTS single wouldn’t work. (Also I believe you’ll not see side B or have working access access to VDNR). Stopping and starting the player again while being lucky would fix it. Obviously it wouldn’t be the same exact issue because the players are so different but I’m leaning more towards to something like that.

Another thing to consider is that maybe your AV Receiver does not recognize the LD and CD version of DTS as there is no obvious flag to tell the unit to switch to it (DVD and Blu ray do have flags embedded on the discs).

See if there is a mode to “force” the decoder to just look for DTS.

Someone gave me a LX-600 or 900 that couldn't play digital at all. I think it was due to bulging caps in DA section.

That's good to know .

Was the optical out still pushing the red LED? Not sure if petercli1 is having this issue since he seemed to indicate that PCM still transferred from the player to the AV Receiver (unless he was really hearing the analog out of the player w/o realizing it).

That was a combo of poor word choice and memory. I believe optical out was mostly noise. I'll try to dig it out and verify.
