I have a CLD-D780 on which the standby light is on but I can't power the unit on. It doesn't work with either the remote or pressing the standby button on the unit. It worked fine the last time I used it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, but all that comes on is the standby light. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

When you plug the unit in, how soon are you trying to turn it on ?

Have you tried plugging the unit in, getting the standby light, waiting 30 minutes, then try turning it on ?

30 minutes :wtf:
Shouldn't have to wait that long at all.

Hope our OP can figure this out or others can help.
I've read about other players and it being a resistor? Search that up to see if it may be the same.

Do all repairs at your own risk.

I tried to start it up immediately after plugging it back in, but I try several times again after several hours and it’s the same problem. I’m not an engineer so I don’t know how to do major troubleshooting and repairs. Any chance it might be a fuse? Are there multiple fuses which could explain why the standby light turns on but nothing else works?

Did you buy this player recently? Was it ever working or was this a repair job on ebay or something.

Could possibly even be capacitors, fuses and a bunch of stuff.
Could even be a stuck disc inside if it was shipped with it inside.

I am the original owner. I bought it in Hong Kong in 1995. I used it a couple of months ago and it was fine. There’s definitely no disc in it. None of the display lights come on when I press the power button. The only light is the red standby light. Eject doesn’t work either.

OK Sorry I can't help much more, I'm not a tech just remember a little of what I have read over the years.

I would search up topics to see if any are similar to what issues you have and go from there.
For some reason its stuck, could be a fuse, capacitors or who knows.
I would personally take the top off to see what it is or isn't doing and check some youtube videos to see how it should work.

+5EV which is +5V is not switched and always on or "Ever" on. That goes to the front panel. When you press the power button on the front or ON on the remote the front panel sends the ON/OFF control signal back to the power supply to turn on the remaining power outputs to power the player. You need a schematic and a meter to see if the ON/OFF control signal is being sent from the front panel back to the power supply. If not being sent the problem is on the front panel board, if the signal is there then the issue would be in the power supply. Verify there is nothing in the remote control plug in the back and that can also prevent operation.

Thanks. I think I understand the concept. It's a little beyond my capabilities to fix, but I'm willing to give it a try. Is +5EV the label of a component I am looking for on the schematic? I assume I need to check this with a multimeter (very carefully) with the power plugged in - correct?

Yes a multimeter - Must be careful around the PSU - high mains voltage!...

SM for 780 is on the Lddb website...follow circuit diagrams.

Ive had Capacitor C12 on PSU go...someone else had the same fault C12..not saying its the same fault for you - but worth noting.

[CLD-D780] Won't power up - PCB re-cap (FIXED!)

If not confident best and safest to get a tech to look at it!!

This can be caused by failed capacitors on the front board.

Thanks. I'll see if I can figure this out but I'm not a tech. If I can't figure it out, does anyone know a tech that repairs laserdisc players, possibly in Florida? It's a nice unit otherwise so I hate to send it to the landfill.
