Found a seller with this 1995 Pioneer model locally. My first LD player with the AC-3/RF output. Came with a functioning remote and the previous owner noted that he had replaced the belts - tested out good at home.

I guess my next step is the AC-3 demodulator, a quick ebay search reveals, yes, it will likely cost me more than the player itself. Otoh, I do have about 30 5.1 discs in my collection, including the always-awesome Six Days, Seven Nights. :lolno:

That's why I would never buy a standalone AC3-RF Demodulator as people think that is the "only" way to get the coding out of the player.

I would recommend searching out these three models on eBay:

Sony, SDP-EP9ES
Sony, SDP-E800
Denon, AVD-2000

These are all Surround Processors with AC-3RF Demodulators built in but they also have an S/PDIF optical output that will convert the signal and send it over to your AV Receiver (in other words, you just use these processors as a digital switcher).

Every so often you'll see these units sell for a lot less than a standalone AC3-RF Demodulator. You'll just have to be patient.

I got a Karmon Kardon 303 years ago which doesn’t output SPDIF, only multichannel line outs, but it was like 1/4 the price of a more popular unit since nothing has multi channel ins anymore.

If you are looking on eBay the Lexicon LDD-1 was the high end model and that is what it is expensive, you only need a simple AC-3 RF demodulator. Right now the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean sellers are really over-inflating the prices. I’d just wait for someone in the USA to sell one at a reasonable price. Search for the Yamaha APD-1 or Kenwood DEM-999D as those are a couple that should eventually show-up.

I would suggest Meridien 519 but mine somehow died unexpectedly though I didn't use it that much. Yes the Lexicon LDD-1 is better when I switched over to that.

Ended up buying a refurbished Denon AVD 2000 for a reasonable price on ebay. There was some corrosion on the metal, so I had my doubts, but it does in fact convert the Ac-3 signal to optical digital and feeds my AV receiver. I am at the cutting edge of mid-90s tech!!

Thanks to ldfan & everyone for the advice.

Nice!! :D

Another great thing w/ the AVD-2000 in particular is that it does have an "auto mode" for the AC3-RF input. If you leave it on, the processor will know to default back to the Optical 1 input for PCM when there is no AC-3 on the disc you are playing.

Also, mind if I ask about how much you got for the AVD-2000? Just wanted to prove a point that they can be had for a lot cheaper than a stand alone AC3-RF Demodulator.

That auto mode sounds nice, although my current line up of LD players has one with optical, one with AC-3, one with analog L/R only, and none with all 3! Still, might use it for all my older components, including a late 80s CD player my neighbor was going to throw out.

The ebay ask price was $69.00 + s/h - about 50% of the cheapest demodulator I saw. Posted a camera photo of my setup on Laserdisc Forever, if anyone wants to check it out!

Actually... you can still use all three.

Run the analog L/R to the AV Receiver on the same input you have assigned to the Denon AVD-2000. When you want to hear analog from the player, you simply turn off the AVD-2000 and the AV Receiver should auto switch to the analog input as it loses detection of the digital signal (may have to leave your AV Receiver on an auto detection mode for analog/digital switching).

This is how I used my AVD-2000 for my dual LD player set-up...

Thanks for this. I'm keeping an eye out since I'm looking to improve my sound setup.
