Anyone else noticed that the trays on both of these players start to fall apart?

On both of my LD-S9 players that has been sitting on the shelves for almost 5 years big pieces of the trays have cracked and fallen apart and was found on the bottom of the players when I opened them up today to do some maintenance.
It seems that the type of matt plastic used for the trays in those players are more sensitive to the amount of heat they have to withstand, as the trays have cracked on the left side where the power mains are situated.
Both the tray and the cogs underneath have cracked and several cogs fell out when I opened it.

My guess is the plastic gets really hot as it's sitting right above the power mains wich is totally unshielded.
After many years of this heating/cooling the plastic weakens and when it's not being used for several years it probably cracks.
I now fear that my HLD-X9 will face the same destiny as the tray in that player is of the same matt plastic as in the LD-S9.
None of my other 7 laserdisc players (CLD-R7G, CLD-S304, CLD-S104, CLD-925, CLD-V2800) has this and they have a tray that is made of another type of "glossy" plastic.

Has anyone noticed this as well?

While I don't have any of these players you do know plastic doesn't last forever right???

I'm actually shocked we haven't seen more of this.

My players are fine. Could it be the environment you have them in. I live in a temperate climate

Yes of course I understand this.
But as it's only happened to both of my LD-S9 players and none of the others I find it likely that the type of plastic used in the trays for LD-S9 (and also in HLD-X9) must be more sensitive to heat than the more "glossy" type of plastic used for the trays in my other players.

All of my players are stored on shelves in the same environment (i.e my living room)
Always the same temperature. No moist, or such.
As it only happened to the S9 players the type of plastic used in the trays are likely more fragile to heat.
Or perhaps LD-S9 is a player that gets extremely hot, I don't know.
My HLD-X9 is also getting pretty hot when playing so I fear the worst for the disc tray in that player as well.

UV light (sunlight) can also have a detrimental effect on plastic. Any indication this is the case?

Never seen this before.

Been using my LD-S9 for 21 years and my X9 for 19 years.
No crack on the tray, just some plastic fading/blemish.

And they spent 9 years in Singapore, not exactly a cool/dry place!

I've seen the plastic get brittle on the internals of Sony PVMs, those get a bit hotter than the average LD player though.

Hope my X9 is OK, still need to put up my racks and get it hooked up after moving.

Get a tray from a CLD-D503/D704/D704/53/79/99 and break-out the inner most ring and it will work fine, just put the S9/X9 front on it. These trays last longer than the brown colored S9/X9 trays.

Out of curiosity I just had to open up my X9 player (wich I have never opened) to check if it also was affected by this.
To my great relief I found that the X9 tray did not have any cracks visible to the eye.
But when opened I was greeted by this

A filter that was totally dried and hardened and had fallen apart in million components
It was attached to the cover on the left side towards the rear (when facing the player from the back)

Is this filter necessary to replace?
It's all PCB's behind the filter.
I'm glad I did open the X9 player and removed all that debris.
It would not have been good to have that debris blowing around inside the player.

Also, that fan that is located in the front of the player is it only running when a disc is spinning?

As I'm situated in Europe the shipping cost for a player from the US will be quite substantial.
Any chance that a tray from a D925/D790 player will be compatible?

The CLD-2950 would have a tray that would work with your model. So long as they are Gamma Turn models, they all have the same tray design. I have no idea what other models that Pioneer released w/ Gamma Turn in Europe.

Quite possibly the earlier (and less well regarded) CLD-2850 also?

The CLD-2850 is actually an Alpha Turn model so its tray would probably not fit.

The Gamma Turn models would have the independent CD tray feature but you have to look carefully that it's really a Gamma Turn model and not the cheaper Epsilon Turn design.

Oh yes, I cleaned that up on mine some time ago as well.

I'm not sure the fan is ever used, can't remember it ever making a sound!

reminds me of the brittle plastics found on a lot of 80's JVC products...
