Post subject:  OMG in love with new player! DVL-700

So, I've struggled with my used CLD-D702 for a few years now...the auto flip hangs up all the time and gives out, CDs jam and remain stuck inside, I have to tweak the RF level to fix some audio issues/dropouts and still lack a remote for audio switching and full control. Thought about repair, and then figured on upgrading to a 704 or so. Never could swallow the price though, so I kept on struggling with mine.

So when this DVL-700 popped up on craigslist, I thought...I could shoot an offer and see if they'd take it...never thinking I'd actually wind up with this beauty.

This player is mint in every way, still in original box and packaging w/remote and cables. I just fired it up here at home and everything is working flawlessly on it-even a few DVDs I've thrown at it. And the way the lights go green for LD and Blue for DVD is incredible!!!
A perfect Pioneer in the box. I paid $50.

What do people think of this particular model? Overall it reminds me of a CLD-D504 I once borrowed. I'm playing around with the remote and settings now and seeing what I can mess with. Every player I've used has all the video processing controls on the front of the player. This one doesn't have any, nor does the remote. Does this have the options for sharpening, dnr, and other filters? I usually turn all mine off.

I believe it has a menu inside of the remote you can access. I think, I will have to check mine.

It's a decent LD player. Not as good as a D704 or above, but still pretty good.

If you're wondering about V-DNR on that, it has the capabilities to do so, but you'll need to get the firmware upgrade to do so. I had Duncan at Bayview Electronics do it for me.

And after that, the only way to adjust DNR is in the system menu before you load/start up a disc.

The DVL-700 is a CLD-D604 based LD design which is the same as the 504 but adds the digital memory. It is decent, but if your 702 was working as it should you would get a better picture from that. It's a shame your 702 has so many issues.

Is the video on my 702 much improved from this model? After testing a few discs I thought there was a slight difference in what I was used to, but I wasn't quite sure. The audio seems the same.
But it works like a charm!! Side changes in only a few seconds!!
rein-o, this was on nashville craigslist. Do you search laserdisc only as one word? Sometimes I've found some listings serarching for laser disc as two words. Here's the listing and the guy still has a CLD-1070 and discs for sale. I would have bought some discs too, but couldn't afford it along with the player.

yep, checked nash craigs.
i guess i just feel that there are no discs or stuff here anymore or it was very limited and i'm always amazed when i find something like the player or the fistful of dynamite, i had that one already so i passed, but it was MINT.

but also you others have to understand, when i see a store with 20 discs i'm shocked at how many.

i went into a store today that had 2, one was the first issue of letheal weapon and our favorite Jurrasic Park

I feel lucky if I turn up really any kind of find. Especially a cheap one. And, boy AFOD is mint! Not a mark anywhere, maybe played only once before.

Tried a test tonight with the 702 and 700. I played though Batman (1989, Warner US, Widescreen 1.85, Dolby Stereo Surround PCM) 1st side on the 702, 2nd side on the 700 and 3rd on whichever I preferred.

This is a really well pressed disc which I got in mint shape. I've watched it several times already and thought this would be a good way to compare. As soon as I started it on the 700 jumping straight from the 702 playback it instantly looked softer. Jumping back and forth revealed that the 700 image was in every case softer, more hazy, less defined and with the appearance of what I believe were motion artifacts/smearing. The color seemed a bit off as well. I found it a bit odd that a player made 4 years after the 702 has a lesser image. I thought it would at least equal it. Even the black levels on the 702 seemed better. :wtf:

Thankfully the sound sounded the same. I didn't detect any differences in the PCM track in ProLogic on my sound rig. (L/R/LS/RS: Klipsch KG .5, C:Klipsch KV-1, Sub:Klipsch SWV Reciever: Sony STR-DE675) The 700 states it has a 20bit 96 khz DAC onboard. (Why 20 instead of 24 bit?)

The 700 menu only gives me one or two basic options (i.e. change the standby screen color) is there any way to access the setup menu? It appears as an option but every time I click it the whole menu just disappears. I just want to make sure that any DNR or processing is turned completely off.

I just wish my 702 worked as well as this unit, or that the 700's image matched the 702. Ugh. Well, at least I finally got an ac3 out. Just need a demodulator now. :geek:

You mess with it before you put a disc in. There is a menu. I have wandered through it before.

I own one & really like it. I rotate my players & it is next to power up. Side A or B button function is good to have.

The menu still only gives me basic options with or without a disc, for both DVD and LD. I just can't shake the processing that's going on somewhere that leaves some artifacts and haziness.
Should I have to recalibrate my TV for this player?

I'm guessing that this is just how the player's image looks. I've been through the posted manuals on the 504 and some of the DVLs. The 504 has no DVNR controls as I remembered, and this player being from a 604 means that it wouldn't either.

Well, like I said previously, you can get a firmware upgrade for the DVL-700 that will allow D-VNR controls.

I had mine done by Bayview Electronics: http://www.laserdiscservice.com

Duncan, the technician there, is on these boards.
