Hello all, this is my first post! I have collected drums for many years, but I just got into lasers a couple of years ago when I traded a drum set for a large lot of discs. I bought a new/old player with the intent to use it, is this considered sacrilege among the hardcore laserdisc afficionados?

I just got a Marantz LV520 (has AC3) that was in an opened box, but it clearly had never been fully unpacked. There was still protective foam taped to the player with the original yellowed scotch tape.

I have two others of this player and have made minor mechanical repairs. (I can handle that, but have no real electronics knowledge.) Being familiar with the model, I felt comfortable buying this player even if it needed a new load belt from sitting for so long.

I felt a little guilty breaking the seal that had remained unbroken for so long, but I went ahead and hooked her all up. She works like a charm. I played a Tears for Fears documentary as the first movie, LOL.

This model is a 1997. My other two players have significantly more miles on them. At least in my very limited experience, the parts that wear out seem to be the mechanical ones. I assume whatever electronic wears out will take longer for this previously unused player. Hopefully I'm set for much time to come!

I don't think it's wrong to buy a new player and use it. It's actually a nice find. By the way, you didn't tell us what player it was?

Whoops, gee I can't believe I missed that. I sometimes have to remind myself that there are players other than Pioneer. :) My bad.

Thank you very much! I have wondered how long my players will last, so I was happy to find this new old player.

Still curious to see if anyone else has used new/old stuff...

I purchased a New unopened CLD-97 4 years ago played it for the first time and it spun like a dream.

Just need to modify this now to play back AC-3 (currently in the process of purchasing a mod kit.)

Regards

Sweet! It is kind of fun being the first person to turn it on. Do you remember what disk you played first?

Where are you buying your mod kit? One of my LV520's is a little older and it does not have the AC3 option. Not sure if it's worth upgrading, but I'd be curious to know how and the approximate cost.

It's 60 EUR, and I think http://www.benedictus.de/bde/index-bde.htm is the only place that sells it.

I actually received my mod in the mail a few days ago. There are directions that go with it but I have to take apart the LD player as it seems like some of the grounds (there are three) are not connected, and there is a capacitor that is put into one of these manually. I have been looking for some pictures online but unfortunately I have only found 1 really blurry photo of the CLD-97 with mod chip.
