The 99 has a slightly sharper picture than the 97, but has a little more video noise. I've never really noticed any "white smear" on the 97, either. The 99 has variable DNR controls, but these always seem to make the picture look waxy in my opinion. Since your 97 has the AC-3 mod, I don't think it would be worth the upgrade to a 99 for a slight difference in picture.
