It's all really subjective about LD picture quality, and highly dependent on what display you have.

Plus, just how many of us have had the chance to see just what EVERY top LD player can do?

There are too many differences in opinion of what people like to make a definite list. It has been tried many times over the years.

The only consistent unit I know of is the HLD-X0 would be at the top.

LD-S9 (it doesn't play CDs).

The SONY MDP-800 doesn't belong on this list at all IMO.

The X0 and the S2 are related. The X9 is related to the LD-S9/CLD-99/CLD-79/CLD-D704.

My list was not based on my obsevations but praise on these players on several internet forums over several years. X0 consistently gets the first spot on majority of the forums. The rest of the players are not in any order.

If I base the list on my opinion, I would not list anything less than cld-95. I dont know if I could come up with 10 players.

I did read or hear much praise on cld-53. Im not familiar with it. If you think its as good as these above, we can add it to the list.

Hld-x0.x9 do not play cds either. But this is the top 10 ld player list. I wanted to have a few none pio in the list as they go cheaper and some are just as good. I.e panasonic 900u,1000u are among best player and can be bought for $50-200. Sony mdp-800 in my opinion is just as good as 704 or better.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the CLD-53 is just a CLD-D503. So, it really wouldn't be in a top 10 list (normally, at least).

I can't agree that the Panasonic 1000 is a good player. It has horrible CLV tracking, a grainy picture and lots of chroma noise. Plus, it makes drop outs really stand out and has no video noise reduction. It's built well, but that's about it's only good point. It can't even read the TOC on LaserDisc's. I owned 3 of them hoping to get a good one with no luck and The Perfect Vision hated it too.

Now, the 900 is a whole other ball game. It's picture is superb, as is it's tracking. The sharpness, chroma noise and saturation are incredible and its Mode 1 digital field noise reduction works wonders on sub par discs with no artifacts visible from the processing. And on A Video Standard it shows a clean 430 or so lines of resolution and a clean 480 vertical lines. via the composite output it's picture looks like a good DVD.

This is why you cannot make a list. I would have the LD-S2, CLD-97, CLD-95 above the HLD-X9, LD-S9, CLD-99. The X9 has a sharper picture and depends on DNR to lower noise. The S2/97 has a lower noise design, smoother background, not needing DNR. So which do you prefer, that makes the list order.

Just decide what you like and enjoy it.

i think it should be lists of what player to get not to get.
like some of the really bad single sided players, i had one i think it was the CLD-201.
i put a disc in and it wouldn't open so i had to take the top off and get the disc out.

or which good industrial players are out there.
players to lookout for quality wise, sure my player gives the best picture quality but what TV are you using and so many other factors.

I've never tested the X9 or X0, but at least i've been doing testes between the dvl700, cld-r7g, cld-79(d704), cld-99 and ld-s9 the last couple of weeks, in order of the best player among these, it would be the S9->R7G->CLD-79->CLD-99->....DVL700(oh lord it suck). the S9 with svideo output gives me a super smooth and noise free picture, the r7g is a bit sharper, but is more pixelated in my opinion, but it's totally smear free, which is superb. i have mainly used svideo output for comparison here, as its the y/c filters that makes the main difference between them, but going on ebay and spending 800 dollars for a cld-99 is a complete waste, even with its elite finish, and i must say that i don't like the wood panels at all, so the 79s elite finish is in my opinion a lot nicer, i have converted my cld-79 into a s9 player because of it, i hate the silver/gold/champagne-colors used on most jap players =)
