I am happy as I won the bidding for a Pioneer CLD-D406 player. It has the AC-3 output jack so I will be able to get 5.1 sound. It has been shipped so I hope to get it the middle of next week. The price was very reasonable: $50.00 plus $18.00 for shipping. I was the only bidder on it. When the seller listed the player, they did not label it as a laserdisc player; but, used CD player in the title.

See http://www.ebay.com/itm/261021295592?ss ... 1497.l2649

If anyone has one, i have a few questions about it:

1) When playing an LD with digital sound, is there audio output on the line level jacks?

2) What is the model number for the remote control?

Thanks.

He listed it also wrong saying it takes also dvd's but it does not!

Also you know you need a demodulator or a reciever with a ac-3 rf input for the sound

And if i remember good it will take digital sound L/R over the plug (no dolby digital)

Remote number i think was:

CU-CLD134

also

CU-CLD097 wil work perfect with it

The remote is model number CU-CLD134, part number VXX2400. Pioneer shows a 60 day back order. Just about any Pioneer remote (not LD/DVD combo) will operate the player.

Thanks for the remote control info.

The laserdiscarchive site says that the CLD-D406 WILL play CD's. I really don't care if it can or cannot. I just want it for the AC3 output. I have a Sony SDP-E800 for the RF demodulator.

Yes, you are right. It will play CD's. As I wrote, it is not that important to me. The seller did mislabel the player as able to play DVD's.

Well, I got the CLD-D406 player yesterday and I am afraid I have a DOA on my hands. I sent a message to the seller yesterday but have heard nothing back yet.

I hooked the player up to my receiver and powered it up. I pressed the button to open the CD tray, the display indicated OPEN and the tray came out. I then pressed the same button to retract the tray, the display displayed CLOSE, but there was no movement of the tray. I could hear a faint whirring sound coming from the back of the player. After 10 to 15 seconds the display showed E0 for slider error. Now, nothing helps in retracting the CD tray.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what to do next? The seller said that the player had been checked thoroughly by their service technician. It looks like he/she did not know anything about LD players, they lied on their e-bay posting or there was damage in shipping. HELP!

Open it up and see if laserunit is moving. If not move it gentle by hand to the back when you press open en see if the Tray comes out.

Most of times during ship, the laser and or tray gets out of alaignment

Common issue with these is the M Holder that holds the pickup movement motor to the pick breaks if the box is dropped during shipment. If the pickup is not moving or you can easily push it forward and back then this is probably broke.

Well, it looks like I have a new boat anchor. The laser pickup is moving freely back and forth. I don't have the money right now to spend on the player's repair so I will have to box it up for storage for now.

So far, my message to the seller (audiovideoserviceinc) has yielded no response. I seriously wonder if they really did have the player serviced before they shipped it as they stated in the e-bay listing. Somehow I doubt that they will give me any money back.

I know with CED players that you have to install 2 shipping screws and insert a piece of cardboard the size of a CED into the player to help avoid any shipping damage. Is there anything similar that needs to be done to a laserdisc player?

well if you really want your money back just open a case and then the seller will work it out.
if you don't mind and will get it repaired later in the future then don't worry about it.

but i would contact and get a price on what repairs would cost then open the case, if the seller is good they will give you some money or at least half of the repair.
that happened with me and my R7G.
when i received it the bar tracks that hold the laser were poped off, nothing inside broken but off track.
so i had to send it and get repaired, the seller from singapore was good enough to cover half the repair, i was fine with that since i got a deal on the price of the player anyway, and with repair it was still cheaper than buying from Japan.

I think you should be able to take this up with eBay.

The M Holder is cheap from Pioneer, around $15 with tax/handling/shipping. If you are mechanically inclined you can install it yourself. This does not require re-alignments after installation.

well, i think that all have to understand that almost everything that is a
used electronic device that has moving parts can possibly break in shipping.

don't forget most of these are made of plastic, don't know about you but i have seen 10 year old
plastic break like crackers, some plastic was made better than others but it all has a very low lifespan.

i had collectable plastic toys that were 20 years old, never used mint in the box.
one day i take the lid off to look at the toy, OH there is the head floating around.
the thing that killed me the most was that i never played with it and it lost 200 value in one second.

why do you think we are getting more cracked discs in the mail??????????
they too are made of plastic, this is how it goes, we too will not last forever.

More on my player.

I opened the top up and checked around inside. I found a small white gear laying next to the optical sled. I removed it and pressed the button to turn the player on. The source of the whirring sound is from a small motor on the optical sled. It runs is one direction for so many seconds and then reverses to run for so many seconds. It looks like the motor moves the optical sled back and forth. The broken gear is the link between the sled and the gear track. It doesn't look that difficult to change. Does anyone know the price for the sled and the Pioneer part number? It appears that the optical sled moves back and forth as part of the power up sequence. With it not moving, the rest of the internal parts cannot complete the power up and then you get the E0 error message. Correct me if I am wrong.

Serious question: Why is there so much discussion over such a mediocre player?

The cost of repairing it is not worth the monetary value of the player.
