No problem, dude. Buying a player from eBay, regardless of the make/model, is a risky proposition... Either from the accuracy of the description of the condition of the player to the way it was packed/shipped.

hey dudes, that's why you pay very little and think about putting that money you saved into repairs when you get it broken from the shippers

Here is more info on my "mediocre" player. (lol)

The broken part name is "CLD pickup assembly" (I think). This is based on the Pioneer website which, of course< has no pictures available. The part number is VWT1110 and has a web price of $134.75.

Fortunately, this part also fits 15 other Pioneer players. Go to the Pioneer website and look up the part number and you will find a list of them.

Does anyone have the pickup assembly at a reasonable price? I would even consider a used pickup as long as it works, of course. Meanwhile, I will try to contact the seller of the player one more time. If I have no success, I will take the issue up with E-bay. Maybe I can get the seller to pay for a replacement pickup or refund my money (I know that either one maybe a stretch).

You only need to contact the seller once. You should really contact eBay soon, it's been something like two weeks, right? That seems like a pretty reasonable time to wait for response from a seller.

This.

"It has been refurbished by our service tech and is in perfect working order."

Yabbut, it didn't arrive in the same condition as it was described. Ergo, it needs to be returned to the seller and the seller refunds the money.

You buy a new motor holder VNL1779 as long as the motor itself did not tear off the ribbon cable and you have the gears. You do not need the pickup assy you mentioned.

If the motor holder is the cast metal piece (like a sled) that the optics and the transit motor are attached to, I can get a new one from Pioneer for $4.23. I am not sure what you mean by having the gears. I have the gear that broke off the motor holder and it has a piece of the drive shaft still in its center. The transit motor is still attached to the motor holder as is the laser. Neither one was damaged that I can see.

I wish I could display images of the pickup assembly that I took but Photobucket will not let me upload any right now. I will continue to work on this as a "picture is worth yada yada yada".

Also, I sent a message to the seller last thursday (5/24). I will give them until tonight to answer. If no answer, I will lodge a complaint with E-bay. We will see how far that goes.

More on my CLD-D406 player:

I let E-Bay know what was going on and I got a fast reply from the seller. To make a long story short: The seller is an authorized Pioneer service center and they offered to supply whatever parts I need to repair the player without charge. I sent a message to them accepting their offer and explained what the player's symptoms are. I am now waiting for a return message. So far, this looks good.

well, if they are authorized then they should take it back, repair it and return it back to you.
you shouldn't have to do the repairs if they are experts ;)

OR, they are authorized but don't know how to test or fix LD players

The vast majority of authorized Pioneer service centers had no clue how to service LaserDisc players and would often mess them up worse than when they were brought in.

Post subject:  Re: I have a CLD-D406 LD player a-coming.

Update:

I received the motor holder and 2 gears from the seller last Saturday. I installed the motor holder last Sunday along with the gears and it works as it should. Upon power up, the pickup assembly moves to its park position.

Another problem has arisen, unfortunately. The disc tray does not retract fully. It moves in and stops with about 2 inches still exposed. The display shows "NO DISC". Pressing the open LD button and the tray then moves out and waits. Pressing the open LD button again and the tray retracts with the same 2 inches exposed. It acts as if the zero position of the tray is incorrect. Also, the CD tray will not eject and it follow the larger tray in and out. Is this normal?

Any help would be appreciated. If I can avoid it, I do not want to ship this player considering the damages that have already occurred to it.

Post subject:  Re: I have a CLD-D406 LD player a-coming.

There are a couple "J" shaped tabs that you bend to the side and then the tray can be removed. With the tray out press close and move the big black piece at the front bottom to the left and see if it loads properly. If you didn't find both of the gears and broken parts something could be inside preventing complete cycle. If it loads properly then press to open and then re-insert the tray squarely and see if it now works.

Another update:

Thanks for the instructions for the tray. However, I got the tray to work correctly before I saw the post. I played around with a white piece of plastic in the mechanism and found that it had been moved into a wrong position. Anyway, now both the CD and LD tray eject and retract as they should.

Now, I have another problem. It seems that the player does not recognize that there is a disc (either CD or LD) on the tray. It shows "NO DISC" when there is a disc on the tray and the tray is retracted. Is there a sensor that needs replacing or adjusting?

(I'll get this sucker fixed, one way or another.)

Post subject:  Re: I have a CLD-D406 LD player a-coming.

so this player has taken some time now.
what i really would like to know is:
the number of hours you have spent on trying to repair thus far.

the cost of sending it to get repaired.

due to the fact of cost vs your jobs hourly rate.

i.e. you spent 4 hours, your hourly rate at your job Y = X total spent so far on repairs X and it's still not working.

so would you have been better off sending this for repair and just working your regular job to pay off the repair?

i understand the "challenge" and i too repair stuff, but sometimes i have spent too much time doing so and lose more on time per hour than the value of the item etc.

Post subject:  Re: I have a CLD-D406 LD player a-coming.

Well, here is the financial aspects of the repair.

I am retired with no job. Not what I like; but, it is a fact of life for me. So, hourly wage rate is $0.00.
The time to repair the motor holder was about 30 minutes max. Labor cost: 0.5 hrs X $0.00 = $0.00.
Fixing the tray problem took about 1 hour. Again, labor cost=$0.00.
I understand from a web search that the "No Disc" problem maybe a bad optical pickup or a dirty lens on the laser. I will try cleaning the laser and see if the problem is fixed. Again, labor cost will be $0.00.

Enuff said.
