Post subject:  Hi I'm new! I just got my first LD player

Hi all,

Seriously I don't know what I'm doing, I must be mad. I started my LD journey about 6 months ago, when I found out how cool movies are when they're massive like a vinyl LP. I bought a few movies because I just thought they were awesome, then I thought to myself "It'd be cool to actually _play_ these movies" haha.

My first experience with LD players was at the age of 10 (ish) when my mysterious neighbour (he was a bit of a reclusive weirdo) invited me in (without my mum knowing) to his flat. Thinking back on this, I'm glad I didn't get raped, but what he did show me was his ultra-cool Laserdisc setup. I think this was about 1991-1994 ish. Ever since then I've always remembered how massive the discs were, and how they looked better than my s****y VHS my family had.
And so, I went on my search to find an adequate player.
I just bought a Panasonic lx-h170 for $80 from an auction site (good price? I dunno, I offered him 80 and he took it) I did do a little research: http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/panasonic/panasonic_lx-h170/panasonic_lx-h170.htm
And according to that review it's a decent starter LD player. I've hooked it up, it's in good condition and seems to work fine.

Just wondering what you super laserdisc guru's reckon. Should I quit now before I fall even further down the rabbit hole? Is my old mysterious neighbour on this forum? who knows.

Oh! and I also had the opportunity to get a mint condition CLD-1850 for about $180, would that have been a better or worse player than what I've ended up with? I read the 1850 was pioneers worst LD player, but does that make it better or worse than my h170?

Thanks laserdisc gurus!

only do this if you want to have films that are not on DVD or you like things like anime, silent films,
wacky 70s films and more that are not on DVD .

BUT if you do like it then it dosen't really matter. you like it and will stick with it no matter.

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

You already took the pill, it is to late to quit. ONce you pop the lid on the player and insert your first disc it is gone. Now, just stay away from beta and ced, lol.

I just had a pretty decent experience in getting better quality out of the LD player.

My HT setup:
Sony 40'' HX800 (top quality LED 3D TV)
Yamaha RX-V559 AV Receiver
Panasonic LX-H170 LD Player

At first I connected directly from the LD to the TV through composite. I found the picture to be pretty horrid, wavey lines, lots of noise, bad colours. So I did some research! Later I connected the LD into my Yamaha receiver and enabled video conversion, to route it through component to the TV. I then adjusted some of my TV's display properties for the component in (lowered brightness, changed some colour settings, enabled noise reduction and disabled sharpening)
And voila! This thing is actually pretty damn good! I'm currently testing my Ghost In The Shell Deluxe box set LD, and it's pretty damn good quality. The colours are smooth, the blacks are rich and, er, black. The definition is as good as can be expected, kinda blurry if you look very closely, but at normal sitting distance it's nice. But over all a much better experience than my very first experience setting it up.

Any other tips you guys have? or is what I've done pretty good.

Sounds like your receiver has the better scaling capabilities than the TV so yeah, good job on that.

Is that player a single-side player?

Yeah, gotta flip the discs! I guess having a less complicated player makes a more reliable player? (less parts etc)

Yes and no, I haven't have an auto turn mechanism break down on me yet :knocks on wood:. But the reportedly very best players, Pioneer LD-S2, HLD-X0, are single side players.

I normally only acquire auto-flip players, but I'd definitely go for one of those if the price is right!

i don't think single side players are better or worse in parts department.
if it breaks it will break, nothing will save it.

i don't have a flat screen TV yet but one day i will have to.
that box set is great, when i bought it i didn't think i would really like the film, but i do and i'm very happy.

I have two single side players that I just can't give up.

One is the Pioneer CLD-S201 that has a great composite pic without much in the way of filtering etc.

The other is a Phillips 488 that has superb pic and digital still frame, a really nice player.

Oh, I almost forgot about my flip-top Magnavox. Gotta keep the flip-top!

My side flip is so slow that I could get up from my couch and flip it myself in half the time the players does it in. And its on quick turn! =) I think single side players give a more authentic feel, like an lp player !
