If it's an LD-X1 then based on experience with the LD-S2 it's a very good player. Mechanically sound and very good picture

Is the player in question an LD-X1 or an LD-S2?

I see so many people write that they them selfs have read that its one of the best/better players around, and still, i fail to see how that can be possible, considering it was made in 89 It's the first player to use extensive digital processing and noise reduction, although the NR isn't adjustable. It's also massively built for the lowest noise signal pick up. It's the lowest noise player Pioneer ever offered in the US but it does have its problems like not displaying closed captions due to minor problems with the digital signal processing. The Perfect Vision rated the CLD-97 higher due to lower chroma noise from its digital NR, but on a finely tuned S2, I think it would probably be the better player. The S2/X1 is the base the Hi-Vision HLD-X0 was built upon. The S2 was built by Pioneer just to see how far they could extend the LaserDisc format at the time - an engineering 'stunt' almost.

The power supply uses toroidal transformers for low "noise". Linear drive for the optics. The tray issue is most likely a bad belt and gummy grease. A little "tricky" to get to the parts but not too bad. It's a bullet proof player but packed for shipping will weigh in at about 70 pounds. I've got 3 or 4 in the shop and my back is not looking forward to hefting them up to the bench
