For clarification I thought this one recorded both CRV and RLV discs. CRV was write once and RLV was rewritable with VDM-V130 discs. Both appear to use caddies, the RLV could be played on any LD player? So do the discs come out of the caddy? Looks like the disc is removed from caddy when recording playing? the CRV disc looks like it has a slide opening for the laser to record through. Trying to understand exactly how you could use it. I don't know if those blank discs would work unless they're one of these types, CRV or RLV. Can't find too much info on it. Getting discs would be difficult now. There was another VDR-V1000 sold with RLV discs so I'm pretty sure they're compatible on this device as they're the same model. Or this one records just the RLV and the CRV designed by Sony isn't compatible with this one. Still where are you going to find the RLV discs? And recording time is limited to 30 mins so a 2 hour movie will take 4 discs? Or are they two sided? |

ODC's RLV consumer LaserDisc player compatable discs were not rewritable. They were WORM discs (Write Once Read Many) that used a dye based system that the laser burnt holes in. I have the RLV brochure from ODC and it was not rewritable. It was designed by the original MCA DiscoVision engineers to be 100% compatible with all consumer LaserDisc players. It's video quality was slightly below a conventionally mastered and pressed disc. |

so in a way it would be a total waste. you would get a DVD and copy it onto a RLV 1st you would get worse quality and 2nd you would have it over 4 or more sides. |

A quick check on the Pioneer service database shows at one time this was available as a service "loaner" @ $73,125.00 I guess if you loaned it out you'd better hope it came back |

ODC's RLV LaserDisc format could do both CAV and CLV with analog CX stereo - I believe, but am not positive, that PCM stereo capability was added later. They never got the video S/N of the discs above 48db or so. RLV was really for companies that needed a small amount of LaserVision/LaserDisc compatible discs with a 24hour or less turn around time - ultimate video quality wasn't a major consideration. I just wish someone could somehow modify a CD-ROM recorder and make the electronics to record the analog FM PWM LaserDisc signal so we could make 5-inch CD-Video discs on CD-R's. |
