Think my favorite must be the X9, i have seen the X0 in action and its superb, but i demand a auto-flip feature, especially with CAV movies =) I also love the D-EXT feature! I know many hate it, but it works so effen well with my TV, great blacks and colors =) done a lot of testing to see how much detail fades away with the dext on, and its not a problem. I think the only thing that annoys me with the x9 is the black smear, gladly it doesn't have white smear, but instead of the white its black and not that easy to spot, but easy enough if you are really looking for it =) I also miss LD-G on the X9, but besides that, its perfect for me, would easily gone to the x0 or s2 if it wasn't for the issues of getting up every 30 mins on cav flicks

i think a lot of it depends on cost now. there are players that people say are the "best" but the format has been dead with no new LDs since 2001ish so can you really pay 1000-4000 for a player that is a dead format? the things that i feel are important about LD players are: side flipping and then second would be AC-3
after that it all depends on how much one can afford. i have used: PR-7820, was a nice picture but one side only and a tank. CLD-3070, first player i ever used and parents still own it, but now its a little sluggish. CLD-D503, good player, i don't think it's as good as the 3070 but it's in my work room! CLD-R7G, my main player, i don't notice all the "looks like DVD"
and i did have a DVD/LD combo, it was a fine player but it didn't play DVDs that well so i sold it.
so again it all depends on what discs you have, for me i have a larger Japanese collection of LDs and need the LD-G etc. that the R7G gives and i can't afford/don't want to spend the extra money on a "better" player

I'm with you on that one, but then I've only owned two players and this is certainly the best I've seen in action. It gets a bad wrap but I think that's mainly because it's not as good as the price tag that usually goes with it suggests.

What does everyone here think of the CLD 3070. Ancient player, (even older than me). I've never had the pleasure of owning one but it looks alot nicer than the 3080. The FDP display is really nice, and I like the flip down front panel to access the disc tray. Also, that is one kick a** remote for a LaserDisc player! I guess the only thing I don't like about the pre 1992 LD remotes is the lack of the illumnation button which illuminates the play buttons on the remote. That illumination I believe first came with the CLD DD701. aka CU CLD068.

The 3080 was a very top of the line non Elite player which many used it has a CD Transport due to the Quality Spindle in this unit and it has some of the best D/A Dacs that rival many Top Elite Players. I always try to keep at least 1 or 2 in stock for this purpose as its a True backup for you that own a cld-97 and cld-95 players that appreciate the film look.

That illumination I believe first came with the CLD DD701. aka CU CLD068. The 3070 is a True work horse, first with the AlphaTurn similar too the 3080,95, 97 series. It was about the 3rd player that I took pride in learning the ins and outs for repair and alignments. There are a few members that still use it or as a backup with the ac-3 added. Usually the grease dries and stiffens on these and the flex cable comes out or is broken between the front panel when it flips down so the tray comes out. The cld91 and 92 are the Elite versions and the 92 is a real rare player, I have one that is mint but is missing the front lens that was known to come unglued with age. I still thinks its a very nice player picture wise, Rein-o can testify and also Kurtis can also and many others. The boards can be a pain too remove to get at some boards for diagnosis. I still have one with the original box, manual and remote for my personal collection.

yes, its a great player, if you can pick one up cheap. it's been many years and my memory is sort of foggy about the player but i remember my father reading reviews about the CLD-3070 and the other better players at the time, i guess that would have been the CLD-91/92 they were good players but the reviews didn't give them that much better due to cost, i know the 3070 was around 750 new, or i think that's what we paid? and the elite was almost double or close to that but really wasn't much better. the one my father has still works, but the grease issue has started to freeze the machine, but i did get it to open but now that i'm not there it will be the same frozen. also it really wasn't that much worse of picture quality compared to the R7G, it may turn a little slower and it will show a freeze frame while turning sides but is a real great player, and i sometimes think about selling my R7G and getting that one tuned up to keep as it's not really that much of a step down playerwise. so if you can get one cheap do it, even as a backup.

elahrairrah wrote: I will be posting a Faroujda VP-100 external comb filter to Ebay soon if you're interested. It's probably better than most comb filters in US LD players. I have one of those and use it for my LX-900 - I truly love it, especially it's full color bandwidth - images are rich and saturated with minimal artifacts even though it's only a 2D Adaptive comb filter. Since its actually a Super NTSC decoder, it works superbly with the many Super NTSC encoded LaserDisc's. The chroma timing adjustment is wonderful too since the 900 has a tiny amount of chroma to luma delay that the VP-100 totally corrects. It's picture crispening control also goes a long way to making poor quality Technidisc pressings look good. Happily, I paid less than 10 bucks for my VP-100, new in the box, this past September. It's easily worth 10x that. One other thing - its internal processing fixes the LX-900's Average Picture Level problem, restoring proper image dynamic range to all discs - basically doing what MSB's mod did to create the Runco LJR I and the II THX certified player. All their other mods were to the audio - they did nothing else to the video, so with the Faroudja VP-100 and the LX-900, you've basically got a Runco LJR.

I was thinking of keeping the VP-100, but since I just bought a new vehicle, I really need the dough. I'll live with the comb filter in my WEGA KV-40XBR800 for the time being. Also going to be listing a DVDO I-Scan Plus Line Doubler/De-Interlacer on ebay as well.
