Post subject: New to laserdisc, got a Faroudja LD1000, are these rare?

I recently acquired a Faroudja LD1000 in the box with manual, remote and cables. The guy I got it from told me it was his brothers back up player and that he only used a CLD-99 which I also received in the deal as his main player. The box was open but the Faroudja looks like it's never been touched. I took it out of the box only to test it with a few discs and they all worked flawlessly. The question I have is what is a LD1000 is worth these days? I can't seem to find any recent prices at all on this player. I'm trying to decide which player I want to keep since I don't have room for both of them. Thanks!

It was made by EAD for Faroudja, who also sold the exact same player under their EAD name as the TheaterVision. What is the whole serial number of your unit? Less than 500 of both players combined were made. Internally, it's a Pioneer CLD-99, which had been discontinued when the Faroudja and EAD were introduced. Compared to the Pioneer 99, it has the massive steel build plus an upgraded ultra low jitter digital output and an upgraded 3D comb filter (it's NEC's upgraded version of the 3D comb filter chip used in the 99). Widescreen Review's Greg Rogers tested it in 1999 and said it was the best US player ever made. Obviously, many will disagree with that. I own the EAD TheaterVision version and absolutely love it. The EAD version was used by many studios as their reference QC player until Tom Holman of THX objected. It had passed THX certification, but EAD and Faroudja chose to forgo licensing due to the high per-unit fee charged by THX. Again, both the Faroudja and the EAD are totally identical except for the front panel markings. The Faroudja version has no Faroudja-specific technology inside.

What color is your remote? Mine is silver and I have the black faced version of the player - EAD offered their version with either Gold, Silver or a black front panel - Faroudja offered only the black version.

If working perfectly, $400 to $700 is what they are worth. Since they are basically a Pioneer CLD-99 inside, Duncan, Duane or Kurtis can repair them. Duncan refurbed mine before I bought it.

Thanks for the info! Here's a picture of mine, my serial is FLD1-1050, it's hand written on the back of the unit. Image

Do you have a scanner? I'd love to get a copy of the instruction manual from you for my LaserVision Landmarks website. My remote looks like yours except says Enlightened Audio Designs.

My EAD TheaterVision serial number is TVG1-1001, and is hand written like yours - the players were hand built and they didn't make them in batches - due to the high price tag, they were made as orders came in for either unit, so serial numbers are similar and not in "groups" of Faroudja only or EAD only.

Also, did either your 99 or Faroudja come with brochures? I'm looking for the brochures for either player. If you are going to sell one, sell the Pioneer and keep the Faroudja - it's comb filter is slightly better than the 99 and its low jitter, reclocked digital output simply blows all other players away for digital sound quality. As I said above, I LOVE my EAD TheaterVision.

Cheers,
Ty C.

I don't have any brochures but I will try to get the manual scanned in when I have some free time tonight.

I sent you a PM to get your email address to send you the manual. It's not the prettiest scan, but it is readable.
