I recently picked up an 8000. I havn't been that impressed by it; it has trouble starting(I think it has a seaking/searching problem) sometimes it won't even start at all, it will try for a couple of minutes then give up. The CLV freeze mechanism doesn't even work anymore(only worked for the first few weeks I had it)
I have an 8000 that behaves in a somewhat similar manner. The player is "picky" about what discs it wants to play: some discs play perfectly fine, while it simply gives up on others. These are pretty cheap, so I might just get another one and keep the first for a spare.
The 8000 does have some interesting features: the perfect freeze frame capability is unique, and the 8000 uses the same linear motor found in the LD-S2 (I believe there may be some shared circuitry between the 8000 and S2 also).
