Yeah, I know it's part of the format, but are there any players that tend to minimize how much chroma noise is visible?

I'm thinking of buying a new player and it's really the only thing I don't like on my current one (CLD-3070) so I wanted to know what models I should be on the lookout for.

Edit: I probably should have mentioned I really don't want to pay more than around 400 USD. Obviously cheaper is preferable.

There are a lot of threads for player recommendations, and I would suggest looking through them. Like many electronics, you get what you pay for. The players that are good at reducing chroma noise (and noise in general) continue to demand the most money.

There are a number of players that go for higher prices than their performance warrants though so watch out for that.

I'm a fan of the Panasonic LX-900U, as are a number of others on this board. The Pioneer LD-S2 and CLD-97 have very low noise (less than the LX-900). Players like the CLD-D704/703/79/99 are all based on the same design and are recommended by many people. They rely on digital noise reduction to get the noise levels down though and I personally was not a fan.

the only input i can add with owning an better / expensive player is:

before you buy one find out if it can be repaired, and how much parts cost if they are still availabe

Oh, I've been searching this forum for recommendations all through the weekend, it's just I didn't really find many posts that mentioned chroma noise specifically so I wanted to double check. :)

The LD format in general suffers from chroma noise and there's only so much a player can do. The recommendations that people make about which players are "best" usually take chroma noise into account.

I have watched my share of LD's on the 3070 and I didn't notice a lot of Chroma noise that was bothersome to me. But yes some newer players are better but then again there are always trade-offs. Sometimes a good cleaning of the optics help, that's the first and easiest step to see if that helps.

How is the crosstalk on yours?

I have to admit that I'm not exactly sure what crosstalk looks like in motion? I've seen photos and I don't recall ever seeing anything like that while watching movies on this player but it's possible I just don't know what to look for.

Here's a photo (sorry, no capture card) of a CLV disc: Suspiria [NALA-10022]. This is just the composite output from the 3070 straight to my monitor with no filtering, sharpening, etc. Not sure how much that helps since I can't do a direct capture, but it's something.

I'm assuming by cleaning the optics you mean opening the player and cleaning off the laser and all that? I need to do this anyway to reseat the flex cables (something I've been procrastinating on) so I might as well while I'm under the hood, so to speak.

I've actually been pretty content with this player and LD in general up until now; I don't even have a decent comb filter for the thing (though I'm waiting on a Panasonic DMR-E20 to arrive in the mail so this will be addressed soon) but it's been a fun format to play with as a cinephile. It just seems like lately I've been watching disc that feature prominent use of colors that show chroma noise and it just keeps bugging me. :(

Sorry for all the questions, I'm still pretty new to this format on a personal level so I'm always learning.

Some people are effected more by it then others also, you had watched dvd,etc way more then LD so this probably has a bigger effect as your used to Dvd,etc. Some disc also produce for of the chroma noise then others. Usually composite out is your best bet on the 3070, or feed it to a combfilter. I usually use my Iscanhd+ Dvdo and some players I hook up my Comb Filter: Alchemy VPG Visual Reality Engine between the LD composite out and the combfilter s-video to the dvdo.

Sometimes, I find just hooking up my 95Elite Composite out directly to my DLP does very well. I know my Cld-52 Elite composite out to the DLP really looks great, better then I remembered when using that player with some crt tube tv's.

Its a whole different ball game now with all the different digital flatscreens out there and so many different makes, models, etc. It just makes setup more time consuming .............

Keep us posted, Nothing wrong with a good 3070
