Let me set the scene....

I walk in Goodwill for my weekly visit, and meander over to the electronics aisle. There's still a lit of the same crap I've passed up; Onkyo tuners, Nakamichi BX-2, sylvania top loading VHS....of course I've seen this stuff so much I'm only scanning for new stuff. A Harmon/kardon dual cassette deck had my attention for a while...and as I'm taking one last glance, in the corner of my vision a shiny rainbow-like shape. My brain tells me to stop, and there it was...behind some other things, a Pioneer CLD-504.

After taking it over to the testing station, I can at least verify discs load and somewhat play. Getting over the U1 error, I discover someone had left a disc in there. Loaded, made the right sounds, time display popped up. I should have hit side 2 to see if that worked, but I didn't. It was crowded and now that I'd uncovered it, people were trying to fight me for it. However, I pulled it off the shelf, I had my hands in it, so it was mine.

$34.95

I was really happy I decided to pop randomly in to Goodwill. Now I have a backup player.

good deal, i have the 503 and it's a great backup player, i don't know the difference but i'm sure they are pretty close.
if you have a remote it should work fine for that also.
all of mine do.

yeah, i have a remote for my 505...it's not the right remote as some of the buttons don't function...for example...i can't eject or switch sides. But it's got the jog shuttle wheel and all the basic necessary functions work. So, I'm going on the assumption the same remote will work with the 504. The 505 and the 504 are...from what I can tell...just about the same thing. The 505 is a year newer; yet the 504 has that less boxy look. The Pioneer logo is loose....nothing a little glue won't solve.

I saw that thing and didn't even think about if I needed it; it was more of an instinctive grab and go.

I did look around for movies and saw none...even in the vinyl bin. I don't know if someone donated just the player or if someone already grabbed the movies that were. Oh well...I'll take it in the house later, hook it up, see what it's actual status is...then see which unit gets to sit on a shelf and look pretty. It still hasn't sunk in that I've got not one, but two Laserdisc players.

The entire time I kept telling myself...it was a good day to randomly drop in to GW; mostly because I had $75 left in the bank and this was taking a chunk of it. Pay day's tomorrow though, no big deal.

Check later in the week. I've seen discs slowly been added to the on-floor stock over a week's time, and it might be the same case here. Congrats on the score!

Here's a photo of the 504; which has an Oppo BV-970HD sitting on top. The Oppo I found yesterday when I went back to Goodwill on, yet, another whim. I bought it not for the upscaling DVD player; but for the fact it does HDCD, SACD, DVD-Audio and supports sending raw DSD over HDMI.

I brought the 504 in the house to warm up, but someone plugged it in trying to see if it worked....so I'm hoping nothing exploded and that in a few hours I'll be able to get some activity out of it.
