I think I remember seeing an LD player on ebay once that had 2 disc capability. It had 2 slots in the front, and one disc on top of the other was sticking out. Could be wrong. Anyone see that?

Pioneer LD-W1 from 1988. Generally considered a curiosity.
More from Laserdisc Archive:

This is the only one I'm aware of.

There's one on ebay right now for a pretty good BIN price, but looks like it will need servicing to get it up to snuff. I'd get it, but have too many LD players right now and don't need another project, and really wouldn't use it much. Since these don't come up for sale hardly ever, maybe somebody here would like to take it on:

Damn that's a pretty impressive piece of machinery! I remember reading about that back in the day.

Looking at the sellers feedback, they have a comment about inadequate packaging. Even at the best of packaging, their not 100% damage proof with the post. So if the packaging is poor it could end up needing more repairs then expected. Unless you could pick it up in person.

I purchased one of these when the first came out at the hefty price of $1750. It ran great, but then I started to have problems with it. The slider worm gear kept popping out of it's slot and then it would go crazy just jam the pickup at the end. I had it worked on which improved things for a bit, but then it died all together. I found a replacement unit on eBay and cannibalized it for the complete player mechanism and now it works great again!

I use this player all the time - but only when I'm watching a 2-disc film that isn't in AC3 or DTS.

The video circuitry of this player is the same as the Elite LD-S1 and shares its unfortunate undefeatable analog video noise reduction system, making the picture much softer than it should be. It's also a player terribly prone to crosstalk on extended play titles, even when adjusted perfectly. While it has a digital memory for fx on CLV discs, it can only grab one in three fields on the outter parts of CLV discs, making fx jumpy. Plus, it has no digital audio outputs of any sort for DTS or PCM decoding. It's a SLOW side/disc changer too, because the entire mechanism, turntable and all has to flip over... It takes about 24 - 30 seconds to change sides or discs. While it has the stupid CD-V logo, it can only play 8 and 12 inch discs. it's an interesting player, but not a "good one" by any means. There is an industrial version of the LD-W1 - it's white in color and has better video performance. The W1 was sold by Pioneer longer than almost any other player. Sadly, it's complexity makes it prone to breakdowns.

on wikipedia it mentions that the W1 got upgraded through the years with improved noise reduction and D/A convertors?. is this true?. I've only seen models online that look pretty old.

It got improved digital audio converters and new versions of player software, but that's it... The picture stayed the same.
