Hello all,
I recently picked up a DVDO VP30 and after several A/B sessions with my players I settled on two for my main LD playback. My CLD-D703 and my LX-1000U with an AC-3 mod. These two looked decidedly better for various reasons and the fact that I use a LCD projector for playback. Any ways this left me with a dilemma. The Pioneer Elite CD-95 is just way to pretty and sophisticated to be abandoned in a closet. So after minutes of deep thought and introspection I remembered that this beauty has audiophile DACs just waiting to be loved. I have a half-assed 2 channel system that I use for vinyl and cassettes through a Carver C-1 preamp. Then I can either send it to my Pioneer AVR, analog of course, or my headphones so that I can listen without the ol' stink eye form the wife. Now I can enjoy CDs as well with this little system and it sounds marvelous.

So who else on this fine forum is using their LD player as their main CD playback device?
CLD-95 and Marantz 6150 TT

DVL-91, DVL-90, and DVL-909s here, all are go-to CD transports.

I was told by 2 techs that its bad or gives extra wear on the spindle.
so I just run my DVD or i'll look into picking up a dedicated CD player.

there are lots of LD-CD combos that are amazing CD players, but I just want to keep mine spinning LDs for the long haul.

:problem:

Now you guys have me kind of worried. Anybody else feel this way? I only paid $100 for this LD player so I won't be losing too much.

I have under $100 total invested in my current 8 players, so...I use them 'cause they seem to sound better to me, and my current setups are kind of tight for space, so the DVL combo units work well.

never. not only does my CLD-3030 sees enough wear and tear serving it's primary purpose,
but when i have this SOB to serve as my primary CD player,
there is just no way the 3030 can possibly be believed to hold even a candle to it's performance;

the 3030 is a great CD transport, but again it will cause extra wear that may not be worth the risk.

I have a Pioneer CLD-D406 and a Sony MDP-600 LD players that can play CD's; but, I prefer not to. The Pioneer likes to keep the CD when you press eject which then means that I have to remove the cover to extract the CD. Not good. I have cleaned the top clamp under surface with no improvement. I have not tried the Sony for CD playback as I am afraid it may have the same problem.

To play CD's, I have a Toshiba HD-DVD player and a Sony BR player that I can use.

My other way to play CD's is to use the 2 200 disc CD changers that I have. Their Control-AII ports are cabled to an Slink-E. A serial cable then goes from the Slink-E to a Windows 98 PC. I am running Disc Library written by W. McCain which talks to the Slink-E which then controls the 2 changers. Unfortunately, the Slink-E was discontinued many years ago and the Disc Library is no longer available since the death of its author. I have 2 extra Slink-E's in reserve just in case and I back up my Win98 periodically so as not to lose the Disc Library software.

The Slink-E has 4 ports with each allowing up to 3 CD changers giving a total of 12. If each one holds 200 CD, you can have a total of 2400 CD's available at your fingertips. I currently have 2 CD changers which I am working on. If I can get them to reliably play CD's, they will be added to the Slink-E which will give plenty of room for expansion.

If you have one of those SOBs, which is gorgeous by the way, why would you?

it isn't, IMHO anyway. i mean, i've like three more 3030's in spare parts for my primary unit,
but sooner rather than later good, well cared for examples of this model will be most scarce at best.
hell they already are becoming rather uncommon in any shape.

i've done all i can to ensure my player's longevity, including a full tear-down and refit
that has well restored my 3030 to at least like-factory-fresh condition, operationally.

i don't have the greatest LD collection ever, but i add to it whenever i can manage,
and i do watch them from time to time, just not as regularly and devotedly as the more "serious"
LD fans around here. don't get me wrong, i'd LOVE to have a massive LD collection,
and a tidy collection of my favorite LDPs, but i have limited funds, limited time,
and many passions to satisfy beyond LD collecting, so i feel fortunate
to have an exceptional example of my most favorite LDP, and a tidy, but limited LD collection to spin on it...

well that's what I have been told, I've tried to pickup a 3030 but didn't have the extra at the time or missed/forgot about it.
also from what I've been told the 3030 is basically the same as the 3070 but no side flipping.

I used to use the 3070 for CDs and have to say that was an amazing player, still is as I have the same exact one now.
but I want to say a player like the 3030 may outlast as its a single sided player and you don't have to worry about the spindle
that goes one was for side A and the other for side B :wtf:
I think that reverse will wear out spindles more in the future.

I have always used a dedicated CD player for CD playback.
CD players are plentiful and far better equiped than any LD player I've seen for CD playback.

As others have said it would make no sense to incur unnecessary wear and tear on a LD player
when really top notch dedicated CD players are so readily available.

I also rarely use my CLD-97 for CDs. I'd like to have the thing around for laserdiscs as long as possible, so I usually limit its use to them (although I used it for a CD last week - sounded great!). I can't speak to the CD play causing greater wear and tear, but why put the extra hours on an aging device, if you have another options for CDs?

I know when to say when. I went shopping in the closet and picked up a Pioneer BDP-320. ;) It has Burr-Brown Audio DACs also and will do fine while preserving my beautiful CLD-95. Which by the way I have hooked up for my music LDs, just cant hide it away.

actually, i do not believe the 3030 and 3070 actually share any parts commonality at all.
they are superficially similar looking LDPs, and use identical base remote control designs,
but that is pretty much where their common ground ends.

now, the 3030 and 1030 have plenty of parts commonality, much as the 3070 and 2070 do.
so much so in fact, that owners of 3030 and/or 3070 examples looking for spare parts
would be advised to be looking into acquiring copies of these lower-end, but usually cheaper and easier to find models
in order to build up spares stock. one can definitely interchange the disc transports, 1030~3030, 2070~3070,
and surely the ALPHA-TURN SIDE-A/B mechanism of the 3070/2070 is common amongst those two models as well,
in addition to being surely common to the ELITE CLD-91 and 92...

I think the signal processing is very similar (both have the early 576-line digital TBC), but the 3070 and 3030 are very different.

The V2200's mechanics are very similar, but very analog electronics - CCD TBC and no digital audio.

The CLD-92 is possibly a hidden gem, it's a 3070 with the better 910-line TBC, so it should have a slightly sharper picture.
