Though since it's a single speaker it's going to be just mono for the sound. Which is a shame as I like having a stereo setup when put my karaoke stuff together for parties.
Hopefully that still has pre-outs for external amplification (and perhaps you can use that built in mono speaker for the microphones.) I never owned one so how does it work. Does the music come out in stereo or mono, with sing-along vocals by the microphones for the 3-way mono speaker? Pre-output would be good option to use. What about the laserdiscs do they need the special laserdisc player or what issues would you see when playing them in an ordinary laserdisc player. Are the Karaoke laserdiscs all CAV or CLV type?

Are the Karaoke laserdiscs all CAV or CLV type? Depends on the player and setup. All Karaoke-capable LD players have mic inputs on the face with volume controls for the mics. The using the preouts from the LD player to an amp or receiver the player sends out the vocals from the mic to both left and right channels. The music on most karaoke LDs and CD+Gs are in stereo. You can basically voice over anything you played on the player, not just karaoke LDs (like say you have a music video LD with the vocals, you can sing along with that too.) Karaoke LDs are just that because they have music without vocals and the lyrics on screen. I haven't run into any CAV karaoke LDs, but they could be out there (maybe the 8" ones are in CAV.) You can still do karaoke without a karaoke-specific LD player. You just need something to amplify the singer along with the music from the player. Before I started doing karaoke with LDs, I used my Sega Saturn (which can display video from CD+G's) along with an old Aiwa shelf system I picked up in Japan that had a mic input and mic volume controls. Ran the Saturn audio through the shelf system with the mics and voila--PARTY TIME! You can do the same with an LD player and karaoke LDs.

DVD have good subtitling and mute the centre with music on left and right with microphone rigged up might work, poorly as the vocals will still be heard on left and right as distant sound. Do they do any Madonna Karaoke? LDDB lists one Madonna specific Karaoke disc http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/21340//PI ... Madonna-01But the vast majority of Karaoke LDs are compilations, so there are probably many Madonna songs on different discs. I think I have a few spread around my Karaoke LDs. Now if you have a CD+G capable player, you can probably find Madonna only karaoke CDs.

publius wrote: Many karaoke LD players have an "instant karaoke" or similarly labeled switch. This engages a cheap Hafler-type decoder to cut the (L+R) information out of the soundtrack, thus cancelling most of the vocals on most stereo recordings, while not affecting the instrumental part of the music as much. Of course it doesn't work on mono recordings, or stereo recordings where the vocal isn't front-&-center, or ones where the instrumentals aren't spread out. Yeah, my CLD-V880 has that, but it really downgrades the sound quite a bit so I don't really use it. I'd rather just invest in Karaoke LDs and CD+Gs and get the full audio.
