Maybe a stupid question. I have a problem with my DVL-919e and my PAL television. If I play a PAL or NTSC LD on this machine the screen is very dark and the coulours are bad. If I change the televion to NTSC the colours are ok. I don't have this problem with my other PAL players like the CLD-D515 and also not with my NTSC palyers.

Is this a issue with this player?

I had this problem when I first started experimenting with this player. There are a few things you can try.

On the back of the player there should be a TV Standards switch which has three options: PAL, NTSC and AUTO. If you're playing an NTSC laserdisc and you have the output set to PAL then depending on the TV it will either show as black or white or dimmed. I find keeping it on NTSC or AUTO has worked with the TVs I've tried it with.

The other thing to check if cinematic or HQ modes are turned on. Press "Mode" on the remote control and you should get a menu showing "Cinematic" and "Standard," pressing "Mode" again will show "HQ Mode" "On" and "Off," pressing it again gives you the ability to switch on or off Virtual Dolby Surround. I find that both the "Cinematic" and "HQ" modes dim and degrade the picture quality significantly.

Hope this helps.

That really makes a difference - WOW! Thanks.
Don't know what HQ does - but it surely doesn't makes the picture better :)

As far as I know the HQ mode is basically like Digital Noise Reduction; the picture is filtered to remove noise but in the process removes detail too. I forgot to mention that there's an "Animation" mode too which boosts the colours, but you've probably found that already. Even before I found these settings (they're well hidden) the picture quality was an improvement on what I was using before.
