Lets go back to the saying, besides that sucking beyond all belief. Way to much can go wrong with laserdisc players being mailed. I can feel your pain. Even double boxed doesnt mean that wouldnt have happened, though the possiblity goes way down. I am sorrry to see that. Is there nothing that can be done?

I plugged it in and it doesn't turn on. no noise whatsoever. basically it doesn't work but would mailing it cause that or was I sold a dead one already? All I could tell was the bits of plastic being broken and everything looked okay except for a dent in the back but otherwise everything seemed in order like I could turn it on and use it but I can't so...

the way my cld-79 was shipped was by UPS or Fedex and it had it so it wouldn't move around with styrofoam all around it.

I should have know about it being mailed this would happen though luckily it wasn't an Elite player and cost more than this otherwise I'd be upset more.

No, someone dropped it and it went by by. The PO isnt nice with packages and you have to package the Players as if a nuke was going to go off and even then, if it is dropped, it doesnt matter how it is packed, it could still get damaged. I will stick by my guns on this one and say there is no better then a 75 percent chance of getting a working player regardless of how it is packed and we are just playing the odds when we order them online.

That is sad to see a player get broken like that - I've about 5 horror stories of my own to tell but will save those for a rainy day.

From the photo's the seller did not pack it carefully enough.

There are a few possible options for you:

Contact the seller and see if they will let you keep the machine for spares with no charge or very little charge - ideally just shipping for example. Haggle with them.
You'd be surprised how many sellers will agree to this as many can understand that it doesn't make sense for this machine to go to a landfill site and they will have no use for it themselves in its current state.

It is also likely this can still be repaired as I had one in the exact same state - nothing worked and it was refurbished a few years ago by Pioneer and is as good as new.

I have never thrown any LD players out - even a broken one is worth keeping for spares. Think how much it would cost to buy all the individual parts and it is also like having the service manual in front of you with a machine you can refer to or take parts from.

That's a really lousy packing job. If it was an ebay purchase, you can get your money back easy enough. If you paid by Paypal, same thing. If the seller ignores you, go with a claim. If you want to keep it for parts, make a deal. But it's a 501, so maybe not.

If it was shipped UPS or Fedex, you can tell the seller to file a damage claim. UPS or Fedex will pick up the player and return it no cost to you, even if they decide to not pay off. If it was cheap enough, sometimes they don't even pick it up. Againm, if the seller ignores you, you can callUPS or Fedex, and strat the claim. If USPS, that's trouble.

If you paid in other ways but with credit card, you can get the charges reversed. I've even heard of people who paid by check or money order having success filing a mail fraud complaint. (Because they were sold a working player that arrived as non-working)

My LD and CED players have an over 90 percent success rate being in good shape upon delivery, and the other ones that don't are packed so well, there is no problem with payout claims.

Your store sounds fantastic for buying decent players. In the UK there really is nowhere to actually source LD players except for Ebay or importing them from elsewhere.
Every single laserdisc player I ever bought came from mainland UK and since I live in Northern Ireland they have all had to be shipped. The next best source is probably France although shipping is far more expensive and sometimes parcels have arrived rather poorly packaged from there so I've never risked it to date.

Out of curiosity do you do international shipping and if so how much would a CED player cost to get shipped to N. Ireland?

It's ridiculously expensive to ship overseas now since there's no ocean-liner shipping available. You'd think some outfit would get into the business of filling that void to ship overseas for a decent price. The only way I know of is to find somebody flying there and see if they'll take it with them.

But that estimate is close to correct, about $100 dollars US. Then you have to think about the discs too. CEDs weigh 1.5 lbs per disc. Then you've got the whole need to transform power to 110v 60hz, and need an NTSC TV set or convertor. It's probably easier to move to the US or Canada. They've got plenty of room in Canada, and I think UK subjects can go there pretty freely.

I am cooking, sort of. I am marinating the ribs and chicken right now. I'll be on the charcoal grill tomorrow. I just got done with braising 6 pork loin roasts with small whole white onions. I'll finish that off in the oven tomorrow, then make up the gravy and mashed potatoes. Fortunately, my wife is doing the spiral ham, and her mom makes the pancit (Filipino Chow Mein) and filipino menudo, which is a sort of stew. I'm sure I'll also get stuck with whipping up the string beans and yams, as usual.

In between all this, I go to the PC to have some fun. That is until the MTM and Bob Newhart shows come on, which is right now.

Sorry, totally off topic!

Whenever I sell players I put bubble wrap around the players if I don't have the original packaging. You'll have trouble getting insurance claims paid if it is not wrapped with bubble wrap. I have had very few problems and I ship a lot of 97's, 99's, & S2's.

I have bubble wrapped the item and still have the claim denied as it was a large electronic device.
