What do you do with players that get thrown in free when you buy a collection? I bought an 80 disc collection yesterday and they threw in the player. Sure I was hoping for a nicer player, I ended up with a 1080 http://dig.utnij.net Came with the claim of "it works with a remote, but I don't have one. Also the power button has some issues"
Not expecting much, I plugged it in last night, power button cycled fine several times, worked with the remote as well, tray came out with both. I haven't tried a disc yet, as it was really noisy... sitting for years it may have build up.
So since this is more of a junker to me, I'll open it up and see what's what and really don't care if I mess it up.
Anybody else experiment on junkers/freebies?

For a 1990 model your bonus machine probably isn't a bad egg!

My first player (the infamous Sony MDP850D) could probably be considered a junker machine!
I got it as part of a 200 LD disc bundle. Luckily the discs (many music ones included) were great but the player....well I've said quite a bit about that already.

Still it was a fun machine to get started with.

I agree, the 1080 is a very decent player for the time. I'd try a disc in it, a $1 disc that you have plenty of, but with the cover off first. Noisy could be relative, maybe more noisy than newer players.

I got a S104 in a lot that I had put away years ago, and just now decided to get it out since I understand it's direct composite output. Was I shocked at how fine the picture was for such a simple model! Now I'll set it up as a backup and side 3 player for those runover films.

For a mid-late 80's single sided player I'd just put it at another location you may want to watch someday. I agree, put in a LD you don't care about and try it. Or if it works good sell it on eBay for $25 or $30.

Fortunately I have a few extra discs.... uhmmm ya 5 copies of T2 special edition seems like a good candidate :)

Noise is relative I guess, my CLD-79 seemed noisy at first, but the 1080 is double that on tray movement.

Ok, just popped the lid and stuck in a disc. It pulls in just fine, seems to be working itself loose after 20 cycles. However the disc does not spin at all. The spindle goes up and down and moves freely by hand, but nothing is engaging to actually spin it. Soooo what do I need to check and where?

I had a 1080 which got bumped a bit in shipping. It would't spin a disc. As it turned out with mine, behind the front door flap is a switch. When the flap closes the switch is pressed, which lets the player know it's properly closed, and starts spinning the disc. The door flap on mine wasn't closing tight to activate the switch from a loose/stretched spring.

When your disc tray and flap close, try pressing on the door flap to be sure the switch is pressed, and see if the disc spins.

No luck on pressing on the drawer face. I told my son to have a go at it if wanted, he was excited until he found out it wasn't a flipper. So looks like it will go to the 'stack them up pile'... until I torch the burn pile, melt come of the components and torch some more dupes....

Make sure the clamping assembly is actually clamping the disc tightly.

Also, try a CD in it too, see if it spins up. Often they do when the LD won't.

Tried a cd: was clamped firmly, laser eye moved in and out, but no spin up occurred.

I'm hooking them to all the different TVs in the house ;) So far I've got a Marantz LV-510, Pioneer CLD-704 and a DVL-700 from 3 different collections. However, there's a collection I'm looking at picking up, but it comes with an original Magavox Discovision player which will be a nice curiosity, but I won't ever use it.

Urgh! That's maybe just a parts player then. It's a nice looking one though
