i can toggle the AUDIO switch on my remote control for my R7G player. when i switch between analog or digital audio, i don't hear any difference?! i don't have an AC3 demodulato, I only run my audio through my 2 channel amplifier.
is there a noticeable difference in audio quality between A vs D sound? should i let it be as it is?
is Analog sound default setting on R7G?

Default is going to be digital if the disc has it. To me, the difference isn't that big. I don't have audiophile ears. If you can't hear a difference either, don't be surprised From a technical standpoint, the digital tracks are higher quality.

Most of the time it's the same master, and I've only done A/B-tests so far. Never heard any difference unless it's obviously a different mix or master (like Sleepy Eyes of Death 1: The Chinese Jade (1963) [AD097-010] where the digital track goes completely quiet whenever there's no dialogue or sound effect).

The analog is a different language dub though You sure it's not a rotter?:) I have had a few rotters, the video and analog audio were fine but the pcm tracks were bad. The digital can be improved with an outboard DAC btw.

No special reason, just always done it like that. If the disc is analog only, then there is no choice but to use the R/L RCA jacks. Chances are your receiver has much better dacs than what's inside a typical laserdisc player. Your X9 has an older iteration of the best DAC ever come out.

I have had a few rotters, the video and analog audio were fine but the pcm tracks were bad. Pretty sure. Excessively loud noises like gunshots or screams distort. The analog track has all the same effects just different language dub and no distortion. My guess is the digital was mastered with the levels too high.

samaron wrote: My receiver is the Yamaha RX-A2020. Have no clue what's inside it, but you would most likely be right. After all, the X9 is 20 years old now. I am pretty sure it has burr brown pcm1796 which is the best modern burr brown. It is an advanced sigma delta dac with super high oversampling. I think Yamaha switched to ess sabre on a2030 and after. Ess sabre sounds different but I can't say better than pcm1796. X9 has pcm1702p dacs. These are 20bit none oversampling dacs. A lot of people including myself swear by their musical quality. Almost tube/analog like, very warm sound. It's latest iteration pcm1704 is improved with 24 but r2r ladder design and it is found in mega thousand dollar DACs. The cost of multi bit DAC is really high, none of the chip makes make them anymore. Use analog outputs of x9 and put a2020 into pure direct mode. In this mode it will offer pure analog path. Listen some music discs in stereo then let us know what you think. Note: only x9 and x0 has this excellent dac chip. All other ld players have mediocre dacs compared to today's standards.
