I have posted these pictures in another post but some of you might get a kick out of it. I am double listing it because some of you might not care what the question was in the other post.

I'd love an early top loading laserdisc player for curiosity value alone.
If they were built like early VCRs, I am sure they were better quality than anything that came after them.
What is the picture quality like from these early machines?

Well, they are supposed to not be quite as many lines of resolution as later players, but in watching both Pioneer LD-660s I have and the Magnavox VC-8010 (Pioneer LD-1100 clone with industrial components) I don't see a big difference. It may be because, though rated at less lines of resolution, the really sharp picture makes up for that.

The 660 and the Magnavox/Sylvania models of the 1100 are supposed to be very reliable and able to play nearly any disc regardless of the type. I sold my Sylvania model to a collector, but kept the Magnavox as it was the 1st player I ever had and was a gift. I have one Pioneer 660 still available, if you want one. These are 30 year old players still going strong.

Most Impressive....
Not all the dinosaurs died out !!!
Single side play I would guess ?
Still a most curious construct, can anyone give a rough idea when actually issued ?
Are these types the very first on the market for home use?
Thanks for that photo for reference........

1982 I think or 83. Single sided, second generation. Leaps and bounds improvement over other player before it and solid player for a few years after.

The only other players of the same time period of equivalent quality were the Sony Lasermax industrial players, they went up through the auto-reverse (both side play) 1700AR. I still have a lasermax that's superb, and three or four of the 1700AR. All really hefty machines.

Thanks for that.
Hefty Machines....
Yes,really built to last it seems, and remained fully functional all this time.
Newer is not always better in the electronic scheme of things.
Someone should mention this to elvis...... LoL
Apologies, but could not help that jab........

rixrex - I know you are the man to go to for CED and LD players. If I was in the US I would be round tonight!
I reside in UK though however I am not ruling out shipping a player to UK.
At the moment I am in the midst of preparing to sell some retro computer equipment I no longer use.
Once that has been sold I'll have a bit more space so will see what I can manage in terms of another player.

It makes a wonderful door stopper, i mean, you put it in back of your door, it doesnt move, lol. It weights about 40 or 50 lbs! It works awesome. Now, I have to decide whether or not to pass it on to someone that would enjoy it more then me as I just sold one of my better LD players to buy an even better one, lol.

Nope, that's the wrong Sony to get. The lasermax looks way better in front of the door and is heavy enough to hold a barn door open.
