The 3080 was very popular and reliable and had low background noise and great Dacs. Almost similar to the CLD-95.

I know I sold my share back in the mid 2000's

Never had a 3080, but is on my want list. I had a 2080, but it was packed very badly and when it arrived it wound up being a big box of disappointment when I got it. The faceplate was destroyed and one of the boards had a nice chunk broke off.

I still have a CLD-3070. I don't know what the differences are between the 3080 and the 3070.

Pretty amazing that there are so few who are still running a 3080 but so many who still own 3070s.
Right now i have 2 along with my S1 and can't say enough positive things about the 3070.

Nice higher end player at the time that is super reasonable for new LD enthusiasts.

My guess might be that the 3080 just wasnt as available as the 3070 was. Pretty sure laserdisc was hitting a downturn in the market by then. I know I wasn't happy when I saw pictures of a 3070 and all the places i went had 2 players (2080 and a single sided player) only to choose from. This was back when everybody had an entire wall devoted to VCRs, but 2 disc players were all you got. Had no idea about a 3080. Sales guy was like 'both side play or manually flip half way, you pick'.

:cry: sorry that you didn't like the 3070, I know its not the best player but i feel it ranks up there for players under 200 bucks
according to now prices.


If you had the 2080 it would have been the same other than trick play.

Based on reading here through the years I've always wanted to try out a 3080 to see how it compares with the newer models that I have. If I ever see one at a decent price I'll definitely grab one.

I'm currently a proud owner of a Pioneer CLD-3070 (was a recent acquisition and thus is my 1st Laserdisc player). :mrgreen:

I just wish it had a headphone jack built-in. Oh well someday in the near future hopefully i'll be able to buy a CLD-D704 or get lucky and find an Elite CLD-99 for a reasonable price. :)

the immediate predecessor to the 3070, the single-side 3030, did have a headphone jack, perhaps the last top-shelf PIONEER LDP model to do so.

CLD-3080s are, i believe, not nearly as common as previous models due to the fact that it's model line was only marketed in the U.S. for a year at most, IIRC.

i have some PIONEER catalogs, one for each year from 1988/1992, and the series the CLD-3080 belonged to was marketed in ONLY the 1991 catalog,
with a printing run dated somewhere around mid-1991 on the back cover, even, and was quick to be replaced by the 1992 model line.

meanwhile many of PIONEER's other product lines usually lasted at least a year, often two, and, occasionally, -usually with top models- even three.

The 3080 is now my main player. It's very solid. The front tray with the jog/shuttle is really nice when I don't feel like using the remote. The player also has a nice clean brushed metal faceplate. Looking at the service manuals, the 3080 is nearly identical to the elite CLD-95 but commands far less $$. It's not perfect, but I've yet to see a player that is.

That was also the first player I modded myself. Looked at the schematics, choose an output circuit, crossed my fingers and all was good. Made me realize it wasn't as daunting a task as I had thought.

Currently capturing laserdisc that I believe has issues but the first part of the disc works but side B I think doesn't. I think it's a defective disc like my one ET Collectors Edition laserdisc I bought from Ebay years ago. As if it wasn't pressed properly. Anyways the first half the movie looks great on the cld-3080 and this is a movie released in the 80s. When I was capturing with my cld-99 it looked more like a dvd with some noticeable clv smearing. CLV smearing seems common on most Pioneer Players. Now that I'm capturing with the cld-3080 it looks more like an analog look or it's hard to explain. It just looks right. I actually like the image the cld-3080 is producing over my cld-99. My cld-99 produced a great picture itself but it almost looks like the CLD-99 is trying harder to be like dvd and not laserdisc. Not crapping on my cld-99 but just think the cld-3080 is doing better with this older release from the 80s. I feel like my CLD-99 does better with later releases if that makes sense. Anyways it's really annoying if this laserdisc is defected. I'm sure Ebay will refund me but the seller might be obnoxious since he is from one of the poorer areas in the Country. I first have to see if it was my cld-99 causing the issue of the distortion and issues with side B and side B completely stops playing the movie at one point. I had this issue with ET in the past for the collectors edition.

Edit: This copy of the movie is messed up. I see the video distortion big time on my cld-3080 and my cld-99 was doing a bit better job at hiding it but the worst part of this copy of the movie is that it won't play side B properly and stops playing the movie. So the movie itself can't finish up. I am stopping my Hauppauge capture. I doubt this seller had a player to test this movie on. I'm not going to mention the name of the movie because I think I might be buying from another seller but with how dissatisfied was with this copy I'm kind of paranoid if there's more defective copies of this movie out there.

The CLD-3080 produces very good colors. I think the colors look nicer than the CLD-99 but beauty is the eye of the beholder. Should I be capturing with s-video with the CLD-99 or the s-video giving that yellowish tint off? I personally think the colors look better on the CLD-3080 but which do you prefer?

grasshopper should I be using my cld-99 or my cld-3080? Which one of these players is best as my main player? After capturing from my cld-3080 I kind of like the colors it produces over my cld-99. However, maybe the s-video on the cld-99 isn't as good as some suggest and might be giving a yellowish tint to the movie. Maybe I should be capturing with composite with my cld-99? I know Rein-o will just respond back saying a Working Laserdisc player is the biggest concern. However, since all four of my players are working. Is there one of these players that I should be using over the others? I know that the Panasonic LX-900 benefits from little to no clv smearing but has the 5 percent cut off on the right side of the screen.
