The main manuals are rather large for email — 16.3 MB for the "Level 1 & 3" manual, 24.2 MB for the complete manual. I'll try to see about getting them to Julien so you can download them from LDDb.

My Pioneer CLD-S104 was the first player I picked up for $25. I use it as my main player since all the players after this had some kind of issue with them. This was the only model I have gotten with a remote! My second player was another Pioneer, CLD-D504. This one had an S-Video jack, it also said "Karaoke" on the front of it. I have the mode number somewhere... but the issue with this one is that audio only played out of one channel. The other port was crackly or very soft. The third player I got was a Pioneer CLD-D502 that plays both sides. When I got it there was a cheap CD-R stuck to the top, but I was able to free that off of there. Unfortunately it can go from side B to A okay, but struggles to go from A to B. It plays okay, but needs a light tap now and then to get it to work. I got a Pioneer LD-838D (Made in 1983) for $20, I didn't realize how old the player was, but it was slim and I gave it to my friend to player a few movies on. I picked up three massive LD-V8000 series players for $60. Unfortunately one does not turn on, the other plays in black & white and wobbly with bad audio, and the last player does not respond to the remote (pressing play) or when the physical button is pushed. My latest LaserDisc player I picked up a week or so ago is a Pioneer LD-V4400. It says on the back it was made in 1997. This seems to play back fine without an issue! It's another industrial player, so hopefully this will last a while. I'm not sure which model I have is the "best", as it's hard to look up and compare models. Although I quote like the CLD-S104 since it was my first player and seems to play discs without an issue. Also Julien (site admin) can you please post (or send me direct link) to the V8000 manuals again? I wonder if they can help me fix my player(s). Or at least the one that does not turn on (I'm thinking it may be a fuse). I can even host them if need be, I have a good amount of space free. Thanks!

Main player is Pioneer CLD-D701 (auto-turn), and I still have and use my original entry-level player the Pioneer CLD-990 on my other TV.

My new main player is a CLD-98 which I just got from ebay. The CLD-98 is basically the Japanese version of the CLD-97 with multi-voltage capability; it has a really nice champagne/gold finish and is pretty rare. I also have a CLD-D606, an LD-V8000, a LD-V4400, an LD-V6000a, and finally an ancient LD-660 with a gas laser. I would like to add an LD-S2 or, ideally, the battleship HLD-X0 to my collection.

I take it there are two different Japanese versions of the CLD-97, as always thought the CLD-959 was the Japanese version. Or maybe the CLD-98 was the Hong Kong version?

Yeah, the CLD-98 is a rare beast: it has multi-voltage knobs on the back, but otherwise it is identical to the CLD-959. So you are correct, in that it is not a Japanese model per se. The manual and markings are English, but it is pretty much a CLD-959 physically. I would like to know what market it was aimed at, you are probably right about Hong Kong. It really is a nice piece, well worth the few more bucks it cost over a CLD-97, and mine is in mint condition.

My main player is a Pioneer CLD 504, Backup players: Pioneer CLD V 2400, 2600 and 2800. All are in working order.
My first player was a Pioneer CLD S350 ... still plays but the door sticks (needs repaired).
