Post subject:  LD player for music.

Hello. I have a desire to buy the player for music LDs. Movie I will not watch. Requirements: reliability, LD playback only, no CD or DVD (the extra parts not needed), digital outputs (connection plan by using the DAC). The video quality is not important, the main emphasis on the quality of the audio. Better without auto reverse. Disks have and will only buy NTSC. I read the forum. Pioneer HLD-1000 is the best player. But it is expensive. Ebay starts $ 1000 + shipping and customs fees. What are the other options. Is there a player for my needs in the price range up to $ 500?
Thank you

Since video isn't important, there are some audiophile LD players out there, such as the Theta Data II and Theta Data III. Might be able to get one of those for less than $500--though they don't popup all that much.

The Theta II is a Phillips, it isn't? This company produced many models in collaboration with Philips. But I read that players from Philips is not good. Theta III inside there is a Pioneer. What are the advantages of these models? Because Theta didn't do the laser/mechanics, and only improved scheme of audio playback. I offer some of these models. Just cost about $ 500.
Also have a question on shipping. There are the LD players, the transport lock? In the likeness that you have some CD?

The Theta Data II is a Philips CDV-400 in a heavy box with some minor tweaks to improve the digital output (it's a transport so there is no internal DAC, you have to connect it to an external DAC.) The audio tweaks weren't worth the price of admission when it was first introduced, but you should be able to get it much more cheaply these days.

I had one and it got pretty darn good audio reproduction when connected to the 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC in my Pioneer receiver at the time. Just that I was more concerned with picture quality and the Theta/Philips wasn't as good as the Pioneer CLD-79 I had at the time.

The Theta Data III is a Pioneer CLD-D704 also with audio tweaks (like a totally different power supply) and the DAC removed.

They're both better suited as CD players because of the tweaks than they are for LD playback.

here are a couple of threads on these players with more info for you:

The Theta units are modified to output a very stable output bitstream to a separate D/A unit. If you can notice the warmth of a multi-bit verses bitstream D/A then you need to look at the very expensive HLD-X9 or go back to a CLD-95 or my favorite Philips CDV-488. If you cannot hear the difference get a CLD-D703 or 704. The Panasonic LX-900U is also good but you have to make sure you get a good working as there are no parts available. Trying to remember which modified unit did have a an upgraded D/A board, it made have been EAD. There were three versions and one was D/A upgraded.

Isn't it true that some Audiophiles would pickup CLD-3080's for audio only???
I though Grasshopper told me that once, will have to ask him next time I speak with him.
So wouldn't that be the same for LD audio playback???

Just get any mid-range LD player with digital output and use a decent external D/A converter that should do your trick more than enough - or even better, make a full digital copy of the audio and play this using some decent material if it's only the audio you want.

That is because the 3080 has a multi-bit D/A. LD music benefits the same as CD. For a movie this is not as important unless it is a movie you love for the music. Replace the typical output decoupling capacitor with an audiophile grade one and the audio gets much better.

So the 3080 would be a great player for the OP right.

I thought I read somewhere the DVL-700/90 player have above average audio, especially analog, though I'm skeptical because there are based from the noisy 504 chassis. I do know on my DVL-90 the DAC output has its own volume control.

Just as edwin240170 said, I think that any player with a digital audio out would be good. Then you can buy a good DAC.
At your place I would search for a strong heavy player who can read disc without error and connect the player to the DAC.

I would also suggest to find a player with both Coaxial and TOSlink digital outs to see which you prefer for your audio liking.

Is that in reference to the analogue or digital output; or both?

The decoupling cap is at the output final stage that outputs both the analog or digital signal as selected.

The 703/704/99/97/95 and i cannot remember all the other high end units use Nichicon MUSE audiophile caps which are pretty good.

would a CLD-79 have the muse capacitors or an LDS1?

Post subject:  Re: LD player for music.

The CLD-79 has the audio parts as in the CLD-D604. Not sure why pioneer did this but the 704 has better audio than the 79.

What's LD-S9 got? Mine sounded like a** when it worked.

The S9 has the same audio as the 99.

Thanks for that.

Interesting. My low end Sony's have all sounded much better.

Sony has always "understood" good audio though while Pioneer isn't as renowned for audio in general. It makes sense.

OP, I'd recommend trying a cheap Sony player to hear.
