I seriously thought about this. Two or maybe three X0s and buy duplicate discs so I can watch a two hour movie without ever getting up.

I have thought about that idea too but that is as far as it will ever get unless I win the lottery but I would have to start buying lottery tickets - I can but dream.

Purchased my second Laserdisc player. A CLD-1950

A great solid machine. Main reason for purchasing: Has a Toslink out, so now I was able to fully enjoy DTS discs for the first time. Also the S-video out is solid.
I will be replacing the belts soon because they do sound tired and luckily belts for this machine are available.

That looks a nice buy, and if it performs as well as its somewhat better known both sides play brother (2950) then you arguably have the best performing PAL player that Pioneer ever offered to us Europeans back in the day

Oh I could not care less about the PAL discs. But yeah I prefer this one over the 2950 because I want to avoid the dual sided deck.

I always admired the look of this machine. Essentially a shorter version of the 503 but with more buttons and a digital output. It may not have auto reverse but that's not a major issue to me. It would also be cool to perform an AC3-RF mod to it.

I’m in agreement with you both regarding both side versus single side play; I don’t recall hearing much about the 1950 when it was current but back then the dual side players such as the 2950 stole the limelight in the EU market likely the same with the 503 (or similar) in the US, so doubtless many people overlooked a player of equal performance/less cost purely on the grounds of convenience and/or oneupmanship?

Plenty of 2950s (& 1950s) upgraded for ac-3 back then; my first one included, bet it would be a walk in park for a man of your talents ldfan

Luckily I don’t have to worry about doing an AC3 mod since my first player has that feature.

I never implied I had an issue w/ auto reverse; to me any machine that works is a good machine  . I probably have more auto reverse players than single side players @ this time. However, my favorite machine is still my Pioneer CLD-3030 which is a single side player with digital field memory; a rare combination when you think about it. :)

It might be. The hard part is usually finding the points in the player to tap. If this 1950 is anything like a D503/D703, the points should be well labeled on the boards. I'm researching the points for a 3070 now and nothing on this player's boards are obvious; definitely will need the help of the service manual for it.

What does auto-reverse even do on laserdisc? :?

Oh is that what they call it?

It sounds confusing since it doesn't actually reverse anything. Well, except the disc I guess...

My two players are a Pioneer CLD-V2600, which needs to be repaired and a Pioneer CLD-M403, which works great.

It reverses the media, exactly like an auto reverse cassette tape player does, rather than flipping the entire thing. It’s seems very straight forward.

I have a McIntosh 7020 that is currently broken.

My main player is now my s2. I guess I should have voted Pioneer!

Replaced the belts on my CLD 1950 couple of weeks ego. Machine is as good as new now. No more hick-ups or anything. Instant loading, drawer opens quickly again.

- Main set up is a Pioneer Elite LD-S2 with Panasonic Plasma in the man cave
- 2nd set-up is a Pioneer CLD-704 with Panasonic Plasma with a Lexicon AC-3 demodulator in the living room,
- I've got another three 704's, and the Mitsubishi M-V7057 which is 704 clone. One has a bad spindle motor that I unsuccessfully tried to repair.
- I also have a Pioneer DVL-700 and
- Pioneer Elite CLD-91 that I'm trying to get working again.

My primary Laserdisc player for now is a Pioneer DVL-909. I'm planning to get more players, to see if the discs play differently.
